Welcome to THR!

Will this be your first gun? What are you looking to do with it? Don't just buy one of those because of a perceived good price. Buy what fits your needs.

The Bushmaster seems a little high, the other prices seem ok.

Bushmaster price is too high

SCWCharlie:

I see you're from Michigan. Jay's in Clare, MI has a brand new Bushmaster M4 as described for $850.00 and many others at a similar rate.

Prices too high?

Amen to Doc.
Have several handguns: Ruger .22, S&W 640, S&W 686, Rossi 4" .38 and a CZ75B in 9mm. The CZ is my favorite but the 640 has been my pocket carry. Only "long" gun I have is an old Marlin .22, tubular feed that still runs nice. Thinking of expanding my possession of firearms for personal safety, modern plinking, home defense, maybe sporting clays and just exercising support for my 2nd amendment rights. Some consideration being given to lever action in .357, possibly the Marlin for easier cleaning (according to various gun rags).

Fired a single shot, 12 gauge, twice while hunting pheasant at age 14, sixty years ago; fired a 30-06 a few times about 25 years ago and, back in 1951, I qualified with a military carbine during basic training at Lackland AFB. That's the extent of my "long gun" experience. Have not held/fired a long gun since.

I do have arthritis problems in my hands but that doesn't stop me from handling my handguns with accurate one or two hand, either hand, shot placement.

Any suggestions?

Ruger is the new 22/45 model!

Just an FYI on that Ruger it is the new 22/45 model with a 5.5" Bull barrel and is a pretty good deal. I actually picked one up as a plinker and like the feel of it better as I carry a Kimber 1911 and the grip angle is the same. My local Cabelas sells them for $239.00 here... and they matched Ganders price for me. ;-)

If you're looking for a shotgun for shooting skeet you might look into a double barrel U/O rather than a pump. Most clay shooters use them. There are many reasonably price shotguns out their, Mossberg even has one. http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=15&section=products Benelli makes great shotguns but the prices are high. Stoeger is owned by Benelli, the guns are guility and they cost less than the Benelli models. Franchi is also made by Benelli and are a good choice. Stoeger's Condor line will run you between $350 and $550 list, less in the stores. http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/condor.tpl Of course, everyone has their favorite company and you will probably get a few different opinions than the ones I suggested but most “name brand” shotguns are fine.

BTW, thanks for telling me about the low prices on those .22's, I've been hunting for good prices.

$200 for the Ruger if its the bull barrel version, is a good deal. Great little plinker. But since I already have a 22/45, I would opt for the Beretta just to change things up a bit.

For plinking I like the Bereta Neos, ours is tatally reliable with all the cheap ammo and mis-fires are very rare. Great price too, usually about $250 here. Ruger is a great gun but none I have (MKII, MKIII 22/45 and 22/45 MkIII) are as reliable as is the Neos with the cheap ammo -- a couple of stovepipes and misfires per brick is the norm, sometimes worse while the Neos blasts all day with the same ammo.

About 10% off on the Ruger MKIII bull barrel arround these parts, and the 5-1/2" S&W (I assume its M22) is about the same or $10 more than I see them here.

Agree you should be able to do a bit better on the Bushmaster. Can't say anything about the shotguns as I've not looded at them for a long time.

Welcome, Charlie.

Since it sounds as though you have some firearms experience, have you concidered buying a striped AR reciever and building up a lower? From what I have seen all the parts will run 300 to 350.

Once you have the lower, you can buy a built up upper of your choice. Check in Shotgun News for ads.

Probably won't save you any money but you need something to keep you busy for the next 6 to 8 months of winter. :)

Strange... I remember the Bushie being $899 in the flyer, but when you go online and hover your mouse over the Bushie icon, it comes up as $999. Go figure.

Thanks folks

The ruger .22 I have is an older 22/45 version and both my wife and I do quite well with it. Only problem I have is remembering the darn re-assembly routine so that little flip-up (down?) in the grip area goes correctly.

Thanks for your responses so far. Anyone have a comment/suggestion on the lever action in .357?

Still learning.

Thanks,

Charlie
