I've recently purchased a gun from a relative. Is there anyway to check the registration on the gun, without registering it?

Depends where you live

Where do you live? If it's in one of the "gun-friendlier" states, like VA where I live. There IS no gun registration, so there's no way to check.

If you live in CA, you might need to have it transferred to you through an FFL 01 holder or something like that.

Simple thing to do here if you live in a state like VA is to just ask the relative to sign a reciept saying the gun with SN such and such was given to you on such and such a date. However, I don't see this as a major issue and probably wouldn't really bother with it. Enjoy your gift. There's no need to tell the gov. what you have when it's not required by law.

No Registration

There is no registration per say in Virginia, but the serial number is catalogued when the weapon is purchased by the original owner. It can always be traced back to the first owner. A bill of sale showing the date and serial number is always a good idea, for both parties. It will cleary show date of possession as well as the price. The date acquired is of the utmost importance for obvoius reasons to the buyer as well as the seller. I suppose that for close relatives exceptions can be made. I personally don't like to do business with friends or relatives.:)

I agree with teh comments regarding a bill of sale. You want to show you didn't own the gun before a certain date in case there were crimes committed before you bought it. I'd be surprised in TN has a registration system.
