I recently purchased my first real gun safe. It came with the shelf with all the little holes through which you are supposed to place your rifle barrels so that they can stand up. Problem is, I only have two scoped rifles; all the rest are levers, carbines (SKS's, etc.), and other rifles with front sights. They will not fit up through the holes. I have taken the shelf out but now all my rifles just lean into the back wall and corners. Doesn't look very good and makes them hard to get to. :( Does anyone make an accessory that I can put in the safe to make the rifles stand along the walls? My old Homak safe used to have some foam spacers that were simply glued on. Not the best but they did keep the rifles standing.

What kind of safe did you get ?
Where did you buy it ?

If you got it from a safe dealer, they can put any interior you want in it.
Most safes have attachment brackets on the walls so that you can adjust the height of the shelves and rifle racks.

If you don't have something like that, just make it out of wood. If you want to get fancy, cover the wood with carpet.

remake your interior

5/8" plywood. Cut holes in it to fit your barrels through. Line hole with rubber to prevent marring you gun. It's not hard at all.

Just make it out of wood. MDF will suffice. That way you can make it any way you want.

If you make it with holes, you can use pipe insulation as a padded grommet to put in the holes. I prefer the "comb" type where you lean your rife against it. Some felt glued along the edge will protect the finishes.

Wow! Thanks for all the good replies, gentlemen! I'll check them all out. The magnetic gun rests are pretty cool and easy but the idea of customizing the interior myself as several of you have suggested is very tempting. Well, off to Lowe's I go! :D

I'm in the same boat and will eventually make a new interior for them. Considering how unaccomodating my rifle safe is to storing scoped rifles or rifles with large front sights it has essentially reduced it from a 12 gun safe to a 6 gun safe. I plan on making adjustable shelving for supplies and my handguns in my second safe. Rather disappointing to go through all this trouble.

Didnt they put the adjustable shelf rails in it? Mine came with it. I just popped the 4 clips on the corners and moved things around as I saw fit.
Hows the new house?

Yeah, what type of rifle are they talking about when they say that the safe holds "up to 48 rifles" or whatever. It seems I average about 1 of my rifles for every 2 or three of theirs.

Hey, Robert! Yes, it does have the rails inside (checked last night) so it does appear that I have some latitude in redesigning the interior using some of the ideas given above. The new house is great, although we are still living out of boxes. :( How's the Rem 700? Did you ever get your scope?

TechBrute: i agree that the numbers thing is very misleading. Fortunately, before I bought mine, several posters here tipped me off about getting a larger safe than I thought I would need. In a year or two it will probably have shrunk though! :D

I don't know if this will help you but I have an AR shorty that wasn't long enough to reach the barrel holes. I just cut a piece of PVC to length that would fit over the barrel to make it longer. It worked great.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I decided to go with B27's suggestion and order three of the magnetic gun rests. They fit perfectly inside the safe and now I can line up all the long guns along the three walls and have room on the floor for some cans of ammo! :D

Just curious. This is just an honest question, not trying to start anything (disclaimers are always a good idea on here).
Why put ammo in the safe ?

I don't put ammo in my safe but I do keep it in a locker. Keeps it away from prying eyes and little hands.

I used to keep it in the safe because that's where the guns were. Made sense to keep them together. Now it won't fit. Too much ammo and too many guns. Not that it's an actual problem... :D

I don't store ammo in my gun safe but I could think of a couple reasons. First, you could want it closest to your guns, second, if you want to keep it in a dry place and you have a dehumidifier in there that would be a good place to store it, and last, keep wondering little hands away from the stuff.

While I don't store my ammo in my main safe, I do store it in an old handgun safe that I bought at Walmart as my first safe. I store my powder and primers in there as well. Just for peace of mind since kids are around.

I keep ammo in the safe for the reasons listed above and because my homeowner's insurance insists on it. I have grandchildren who are often over and, while they have been educated about keeping 'hands off", I believe in playing it safe. My homeowner's requires that I have the ammo in a "locker or safe" and the safe now has room, so ................

Techbrute;

I can't speak for other dealers, but we always tell customers that one slot does not necessarily equal one gun. I suppose someone out there collects single-shot 20 gauge shotguns exclusively & can max the slots, but that's not the typical owner/user.
