Guns For Fun at Range

My .223 handguns are closer to rifles than pistols and are more serious in application.

This might be the most fun pistol I have played with not a serious application in sight…

I have a few range toys. One of my favorites is an LP 08 Royal Erfurt mixmaster Luger. Oh, and one of my favorite rifles is a Winchester M1D.

It reminds me of the "purpose" of a belt-fed addition to the squad: To increase the lead density downrange!
:D

Unless the goal is to have a bunch of people on hand and enjoy the reactions from all the different shooters, I don't consider any guns that are unpleasant/painful to fire to be a good choice for fun at the range.

For me, fun is more than a shot or two, so I don't get a big kick out of shooting expensive ammo.

Hitting the target is fun, so I'm not a fan unless the gun is decently accurate. That means different things for different firearms, targets and shooting. For example, shooting cans at close range is one standard, shooting clay targets on the 100yard berm is another.

I like shooting more than reloading, so it's nice to have something you can shoot a few times before it's time to go back to the ammo box and refill the magazine/cylinder.

Hard to go wrong with any of the following as long as the accuracy goals are met.

DA revolver in .38Sp or lighter caliber.
Full-sized 9mm pistol.
.22LR rifle.
Lever action/semi-auto centerfire rifles that don't pound the shooter.

I think we can all agree that shooting is fun.

I have been shooting more 9mm than anything lately- about 600 rounds last month.

Which range session stands out the most?

.357 with some spicy hand loads.

I love .22s. They can't be beat for the fun factor and cost per shot. I like my 9s and love the Blackhawk in .45 Colt.

But it's tough to beat an incredibly loud and bright explosion a few inches from your hands to get the old ticker pumping.

I just learned of this fun gun and might just grab one if it pops up in the gun shop, or could order one through my LGS. Watch this mag dump and it eats any .22LR ammo and seems as reliable as the famed P-32.

Holy resurrected thread, Batman! Having said THAT, a gun that is fun, but impractical, just a fun gun for the range? Hard to beat this flame throwing monster!

10 yard target. Da Boy calls it "stupid fun".

Hand made 58 caliber percussion pistol from an old school gunsmith that became nicknamed the Muzzle Loading Hip Howitzer, and loaded lightly, it is a lot of fun to shoot. I bought it for Da Boy to match his rifle. Yes, the rifle a lefty, like him.

BTW, the incredible fun fact is the barrel for the Hip Howitzer came from the rifle you see - when LAGS rebuilt it for him, he requested the Kit Carson be cut down more to a Hawken length, and that barrel stub became the Hip Howitzer. How cool is that?

Fun Gun? FUN? This is a FUN gun:

Winchester slide action .22 rimfire. Short, Long or Long rifle. Frequently used in carnival gallery shooting.
Another design by John Moses Browning. This model of 1906 was made in 1919 and still is a great plinker and tin can perforator.
Fun it is!

Since this has been revived I'll join in. I find just about anything that doesn't have what I consider brutal recoil fun. As I age I find more guns in that category.

I can think of one with almost no recoil that wasn't though My SIL bought Mossberg's version of an AR 22 for the number 2 grand daughter. She could not get it to work, neither could he, and the same for me. I solved the problem by getting her an S&W 15-22. A few months later I was in the LGS just killing time and picked up a sand colored AR from the rack. An acquaintance sitting on the stool beside said " That is a piece of junk." He and the LGS owner had taken it to the range and neither could get it to work. You can guess the brand.

I have the most fun lighting off full power, black powder 45 Colt rounds from my Uberti 1873 7th Calvary SAA replica. It's all the fun of shooting, with the added spectacle of a fireworks show!
