Gentlemen,

About a month ago I sought opinions on CCW ambi 40's since I'm a lefty. You all gave me some very valuable info and I have narrowed it down to 2 models, the H&K USP 40 compact and the S&W M&P 40 compact.

I haven't shot either of these pistols at the range yet (am planning to do so) but was wondering how the recoil might be on these compact 40's. I have been told that the H&K has a much reduced felt recoil due to its "advanced recoil reducing action" (for lack of better terminology). Is the recoil on the S&W M&P compact much more than the H&K or about the same? Have any ideas how these would compare to a 6" Model 29.

I have been a wheel man most of my life and can shoot my 6" Model 29 pretty good, so I believe I know what "recoil" is.

Your thoughts and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

I have 10's of 1000's of rounds through several USPs, so I'd go w/ the USPc 40 ;) Fantastic reliability, accuracy, fit & finish....great guns!

usp!!i just got one and love it. even though i only shot 25rounds and mine is fullsize.

if you re on a budget, the mp40 is a nice weapon too.

Well I would go with the HK P2000. Its a little sleeker than the USPc. It is a completely ambi pistol. I have one and it is an evolution of the USPc in my eyes. I would seriously recommend one. You can customize the grips as well to fit your hand.

You should be looking at the HK P2000. I am a lefty I own two they are super fine pistols. My vote is HK's P2000 with a lem trigger and night sights. I own both calibers 9mm & 40 both shoot great. It's hard to beat HK quality german guns.

I own both the HK P2000 and HK P2000sk. Both are excellent pistols. I cannot compare them to the USPc. However I think they are very easy guns to shoot with little recoil.

I would check www.policeguns.com for a good price. I also recommend the LEM trigger myself.

I think that P2000 series is easier to carry due to the slide being contoured and rounded. I think the USPc is a little blockier.

The easist to conceal is the P2000sk however it is not much harder to conceal the P2000.

The M&P is a darn fine pistol that will serve you well. You can't go wrong with any of the choices, so it really boils down to the one that appeals most to you.

HK makes a great pistol.
if you are looking at a compact definitely consider the P2000.
I have a .40 USP full sized and love it.

The HK design is well-tested and solid. The M&P40C is new. This is a solid advantage to the HK, in terms of the end user having a good idea about what he is going to get. However, that doesn't mean the HK is better. It just means that it has a longer track record. S&W has been very good about fixing the (fairly minimal) problems that have been cropping up in the M&P line. Unless some trend of problems develops in the M&PC line, I would treat reliability as a wash.

To me, it would boil down to subjectives like ergonomics and concealability. I strongly prefer the M&P in this regard, but others will disagree. I think the H&K handles like a brick.

The M&P handles recoil well and has a decent trigger. The trigger, apparently, is one that is very amenable to improvements (Dan Burwell is one of the guys doing good work on the M&P trigger system, but it is supposedly very easy to do yourself if you have some basic skills). The interchangable grip system is very nice. I carry a fullsize at work, and I'll own a compact very soon.

H&K. Mine was originally a variant 1 but I got the LEM trigger from CDNN and now I have the lighter weight LEM trigger with a 4 lbs. 12 oz. trigger pull every time but with a long 1-2 lbs. takeup for the first shot.

I traded my Glock G27 about a month ago for my M&P .40c. I love the gun. From the first time I picked it up, I knew that I was going to buy it!! It feels like it was made for my hand. It has less felt recoil than the G27 did. I am probably consistently 50% more accurate with the M&P.
The H&K has a great name and has certainly been out longer. I have never owned one, so I really can't say anything about them.
I sure do like the M&P though! I also like that it is made in the USA!!
Here are a few pictures with my M&P and the Comp-tac Infidel Holster.

get the P2000 if you're one of those strange left handed people

Looks like I will add the H&K P2000SK to my list. I am looking only at the compact versions of whatever model I decide to get. I want the compact version for more concealment and less bulk. In other words, it needs to be out of my way while I'm working down on the ranch.

Does anyone have any idea as to how the USP Compact, P2000SK, and M&P Compact in 40 S&W compare to each other as far as recoil is concerned. Does one have a distinct advantage over the others?

Oh, by the way Gudel, us lefties aren't that strange, we just have to live in this strange right-handed world. : :neener:

Again guys, thanks for all the info. Y'all have a nice day.:)

The biggest distinction here is if you want a traditional SA/DA trigger or a consistant Glock-ish trigger. I have guns of both types and I`m growing to like the latter more and more for "social applications". A good friend of mine has carried a USPc40 for years. I`ve put a good many rounds through it and to be perfectly honest my impression has always been that it`s fine. Just fine, but not remarkable in any way. It`s not especially accurate, the trigger of his particular gun is not nearly as nice as some CZs I have that cost half as much. It`s reliable but has jammed on at least a few occasions I can remember. A very servicable gun but like many euro items overpriced IMHO for what it is.
I don`t have any experience with the compact M&P but I do have a full sized M&P40. Recoil is very mild,at least as mild as my steel framed 9mm CZ-75B. That`s high praise because many other 40s (like my Kahr P40) have a fairly sharp kick and brisk muzzle flip. The trigger has a fairly gritty take up when I got it but a clean break and agreeable pull weight. After dry firing it some (with snap cap) and puttign a few hundred rounds through it it smoothed out nicely. It`s still no "breaking glass rod" but it`s better than most Glocks I`ve shot and comparable in my mind to the SA pull of the USPc. I still have under 1000rds. through it so I can`t comment on reliability so far except to say it`s been 100% so far. The ampi slide release and easily reversible mag release should be a big plus for a southpaw. I don`t know that I`d say it`s a "better" gun than the H&K but so far it seems comparable and certainly a better value. It`s outstanding (to me) ergos and more svelt shape (for more comfy carry) make it an easy choice for me. Marcus

Take the cash you'd spend on the H&K and buy American. Heck, you can buy two S&W's for that price. Or one and a really nice holster, many boxes of ammo, and still have enough money to rent the H&K somewhere to find out what you're supposedly missing. The M&P's reliability is still questionable, particularly in the minds of Glock-nuts, but I have yet to hear of anyone with a 40 that has had any gun-induced issues. I seem to recall the earliest 9mm had extractor issues, but they were all fixed by replacing it with the 40 extractor, or something.
