Brits Propose Weapons Amnesty
Britian Calls For Gun Amnesty
The Sun, British newspaper is reporting, "The Home Secretary is to push for a nationwide knives amnesty to be expanded to include guns."
"Charles Clarke is making the move in the wake of the horrific death of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky and the shooting of her colleague Teresa Milburn."
"Mr Clarke says he believes it is the Government’s duty to get as many weapons off the streets as possible."
"Ministers were already planning a six-month knives amnesty in February or March to coincide with the Violent Crime Reduction Bill becoming law."
"They will now hold talks with the Association of Chief Police Officers on extending the campaign to include the handing in of other weapons."
"A Home Office source said: “We are going to hold a nationwide knife amnesty early in the New Year. We are keen to extend it to include other weapons such as airguns. We will also be taking advice from police chiefs to see whether the amnesty could cover imitation and other guns.”
"Mr Clarke, who pays tribute to murdered Sharon and shot Teresa in a Sun article on Page 6, said: “My main priority is to ensure that guns no longer have a place on our streets and that armed gangs who terrorise innocent people are brought to justice.”
"Mr Clarke also raised serious doubts about arming all cops. He said: “I remain sceptical that arming all police officers all of the time would make them safer.”
"The Violent Crime Reduction Bill is primarily aimed at tackling knife offences."
"The minimum age for buying a knife will be raised to 18. Headteachers will get new powers to search pupils for knives. And more types of knives could be listed as banned weapons."
"The bill also aims to crack down on the manufacture, import and sale of replica guns. The sale of airguns will also be restricted."
"Dealers will have to register to sell them and pay a £150 fee. Internet and mail order sales will be outlawed."
"During a month long amnesty in 2003, more than 20,000 weapons and 500,000 rounds of ammo were handed in. A firearms amnesty in 1996, following the killing of schoolchildren at Dunblane, saw 23,000 firearms and 700,000 rounds of ammunition surrendered."
