Brits Propose Weapons Amnesty

Britian Calls For Gun Amnesty

The Sun, British newspaper is reporting, "The Home Secretary is to push for a nationwide knives amnesty to be expanded to include guns."

"Charles Clarke is making the move in the wake of the horrific death of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky and the shooting of her colleague Teresa Milburn."

"Mr Clarke says he believes it is the Government’s duty to get as many weapons off the streets as possible."

"Ministers were already planning a six-month knives amnesty in February or March to coincide with the Violent Crime Reduction Bill becoming law."

"They will now hold talks with the Association of Chief Police Officers on extending the campaign to include the handing in of other weapons."

"A Home Office source said: “We are going to hold a nationwide knife amnesty early in the New Year. We are keen to extend it to include other weapons such as airguns. We will also be taking advice from police chiefs to see whether the amnesty could cover imitation and other guns.”

"Mr Clarke, who pays tribute to murdered Sharon and shot Teresa in a Sun article on Page 6, said: “My main priority is to ensure that guns no longer have a place on our streets and that armed gangs who terrorise innocent people are brought to justice.”

"Mr Clarke also raised serious doubts about arming all cops. He said: “I remain sceptical that arming all police officers all of the time would make them safer.”

"The Violent Crime Reduction Bill is primarily aimed at tackling knife offences."

"The minimum age for buying a knife will be raised to 18. Headteachers will get new powers to search pupils for knives. And more types of knives could be listed as banned weapons."

"The bill also aims to crack down on the manufacture, import and sale of replica guns. The sale of airguns will also be restricted."

"Dealers will have to register to sell them and pay a £150 fee. Internet and mail order sales will be outlawed."

"During a month long amnesty in 2003, more than 20,000 weapons and 500,000 rounds of ammo were handed in. A firearms amnesty in 1996, following the killing of schoolchildren at Dunblane, saw 23,000 firearms and 700,000 rounds of ammunition surrendered."

THE Home Secretary is to push for a nationwide knives amnesty to be expanded to include guns.

Charles Clarke is making the move in the wake of the horrific death of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky and the shooting of her colleague Teresa Milburn.

Mr Clarke says he believes it is the Government’s duty to get as many weapons off the streets as possible.

Ministers were already planning a six-month knives amnesty in February or March to coincide with the Violent Crime Reduction Bill becoming law.

They will now hold talks with the Association of Chief Police Officers on extending the campaign to include the handing in of other weapons.

A Home Office source said: “We are going to hold a nationwide knife amnesty early in the New Year. We are keen to extend it to include other weapons such as airguns. We will also be taking advice from police chiefs to see whether the amnesty could cover imitation and other guns.”

Mr Clarke, who pays tribute to murdered Sharon and shot Teresa in a Sun article on Page 6, said: “My main priority is to ensure that guns no longer have a place on our streets and that armed gangs who terrorise innocent people are brought to justice.”

Mr Clarke also raised serious doubts about arming all cops. He said: “I remain sceptical that arming all police officers all of the time would make them safer.”

The Violent Crime Reduction Bill is primarily aimed at tackling knife offences.

The minimum age for buying a knife will be raised to 18. Headteachers will get new powers to search pupils for knives. And more types of knives could be listed as banned weapons.

The bill also aims to crack down on the manufacture, import and sale of replica guns. The sale of airguns will also be restricted.

Dealers will have to register to sell them and pay a £150 fee. Internet and mail order sales will be outlawed.

During a month long amnesty in 2003, more than 20,000 weapons and 500,000 rounds of ammo were handed in. A firearms amnesty in 1996, following the killing of schoolchildren at Dunblane, saw 23,000 firearms and 700,000 rounds of ammunition surrendered.

NO kidding. He's nuts.

What, are we going to remove knives from the kitchen next?

It never ceases to amaze me just how out of touch these morons really are, and their lack of lucidity re the same.

When I read this I almost had a heart attack, but then I saw the pound symbol and relized it was those Englishmen, at it again.

Considering that prisoners can make a shiv from a toothbrush and a razorblade, the Home Secretary is simply going to need to ban or register all matter currently in the solid phase.

Less!! THAT method requires heat...heck, I saw one the other day that was just tightly-rolled newspaper, with four safety-razor blades wedged into slits cut into the length. Handy little mace...weighed about five or six pounds.

Anyone up for banning the media?!? Bliss-ninnies...:banghead:

sic transit gloria

This is what socialism can do to even a nation as great as England once was. Stay strong, you THRers over there.

They are looking to ban happy hour in the bar, and restrict alcohol consumption.

They are looking at banning almost all "fun".

Sir Winston Churchill must be rolling over in his grave.

Should Tony Blair be nominated for the First Annual "Neville Chamberlain Award" for political appeasement?

I don't mean to bash that country but do you not realize the first murder was committed with hands (Cain and Able)?

Ban hands?

Tony Blair wants to ban airguns but add more nukes to the Brit arsenal.

weapons off the streets
What a crock - as if that means squat!! That is a vote getter - nothing else. I am tired of it.

"Amnesty'' - hand-ins - are a joke, a big joke. When in recorded history have bad people aquiesced to such things? Hardly ever I'll bet. Sure, some old folks who feel ''guilty'' about the old .22 or WWII handgun in the attic will probably go hand in - only to better therefore render themselves defenceless.

Meantime, the thugs actually benefit by having fewer weapons to be used against them by solid honest folks. A criminal is almost by simple definiton - a law breaker!

This is all vote-mongering IMO - all the way - try and convince the sheep that ''we (Gov) are doing something'' and so by default making ''the streets'' safer. Total crap!

If they wanted to do something useful they'd allow for honest folks to have suitable means of self defence and laws that allowed for same. Geez, and to think I came from that place!

Sindawe - thx for pointing out the dupe.

TIZ, I don't know your country of origin, but in all fairness, regarding the banning of "fun" in regards to government restrictions on booze consumption, America has to rate pretty close to the top of all western democratic nations.

We may have the best gun laws in the civilized democratic world, but not the best laws regarding prohibition of intoxicating substance. I'll grant you that I've never been out of the western hemisphere, but my internet travels suggest to me that Britons and Europeans are a lot bigger boozers in general than Americans, and their degenerate alcoholics are somewhat less of a problem in general than that of Americans.

To some extent I place the blame for that dichotomy on our Puritan tradition. Puritans were never known for "fun", but firearms are a useful tool, and they were known for efficient use of every tool available.

In all fairness to Cain, I don't think the passage in "Genesis" is clear that that murder was commited with bare hands. It could have been a rock or a stick :D

Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." [d] And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
"I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"

10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."

Note that verse 7

7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

is the world's first Nike commercial. "You know what is right - just do it."

I have that verse pinned up in my bathroom.

"Mr Clarke says he believes it is the Government’s duty to get as many weapons off the streets as possible."

Well, it's easier than getting criminals off the streets... :barf:

And besides, "We have to do something!"

I understand that foreign countries exist, but why? And where are they anyway?
They exist because America needs immigrants.
Who cares where they are?
Kidding, kidding...

Good grief!

What's next, turn in your brains? Where will England be when they get attacked next? Call in the US again? We have saved their butts too many times. Let them turn in their guns, knives, their spines and their brains.
