Handgun Storage Question

All,

I am looking for a way to store my handguns. As of now I just lay them on a rubber mat on a bench but they take up too much space that way. I saw once where people were basically putting a "dowwel" mounted to the wall down the barrel. Does anyone know where these can be purchased of if they are harmful to the firearm at all?

One of my buds from Wash does this, he is a glock armorer so I guess it's ok, he'd know as good as anyone. He made his from wooden dowels stuck in some holes in a 1"x12" that was mounted to the wall, it looked pretty cool. I cant imagine it hurting anything unless your house is humid and the wood holds moisture.

Nah it won't hurt them at all just make sure the dowels are smooth and you might wanna sand off the "corners" on the end that will go down the barrel. That will help to keep the end of the dowel from losing any little splinters into the gun. I wouldn't put any kind of finish on the dowel if you are thinking about doing that.

Get a lockable container (i.e., safe) that you can bolt down, otherwise you may come home to a burglarized house and no guns someday.

The best advice you can get. You say you just lay them on a rubber mat on a bench. Is this out in the open in your basement? in your bedroom? Do you have a single family home,or apartment? Sounds like a invitation to theft.

I have a all concrete "bunker" that has several deadbolts on a metal door in my basement of a single family home. The whole room is a safe Have to keep the kids safe!

go for the dowel idea, a local gun shop stores em like that; i figure they would have stopped if it was causing damage to their merchandice

I mounted a board in my safe with dowels placed at a small angle upward. Worked great but a 6" Mod 29 broke one. I found some non-metallic probes that will replace the dowels. On my list of projects.

I used metal rods ( much stronger ) with heat shrink tubing covering the exposed parts. A heavy .22 is too much for a wooden dowel, fiberglas rods would probably also work.

A 4-year-old boy shot and killed himself early Thursday morning with the gun of a Detroit police officer who was baby-sitting him at a home on the city's east side.

Police say the off-duty officer, 59-year-old Louis Anderson, was watching four children when the shooting occurred on the 15800 block of Park Grove Street.

Anderson was in another room when he heard a loud blast and found the child on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head just after midnight Thursday, police said.The gun was under the bed, police said. The boy was identified as Kenneth Thomas.

Detroit Police spokesman James Tate said the gun was a Glock and was the officer's department-issued weapon. The guns have a reputation for having a hair trigger and can easily discharge. The safety in a Glock is in the trigger mechanism.

"We have submitted paperwork to the Prosecutor's Office," said Tate about the incident.

Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, said the office would weigh what, if any, charges to file.

"We don't expect to have any decision until next week," she said.

Some residents in the area gathered near the family's home after hearing of the death.

Charles Alston Jr., a 36-year-old father of three, wondered how the boy could have such easy access to the officer's gun.

"Being a police officer, it's supposed to be out of reach," said Alston, who was visiting his mother Thursday when he heard the news of the shooting. "When you're off-duty, you're off-duty," said Alston. "Your gun is supposed to be locked up."

Anderson is assigned to the Detroit Police Department's Southwestern District on Fort Street. Police officials say Anderson's record on the city's police force has been clean. He has been placed on administrative leave.

I have purchased plastic gun suitcases [suitcases are plastic...not the guns ] that have gray eggshell foam rubber padding on the inside. They can be stacked or placed side by side, hung from a nail, or tied to the rafters.

Question is, does this gray foam ever interact with the oil or other preservative on the gun. Had seen a beautiful solid walnut table interact with the foam cover used to protect it. Suppose it was the was oil on the table or some component of the foam rubber. But that was many years ago and the foam was green.

If the pistol is not on my hip or pocket, in the glovebox or trunk, in a drawer or hanging next to an entrace door, or in my hand in use, it is in one of these suitcases. Its the being in the case that bothers me.....will the foam damage my firearm, maybe even stainless. I always wipe arms with cloth sprayed with Break Free. Ever any experience with this? Otherwise, they seem to be the perfect storage media and they are cheap.

Yes, grey foam will break down from gun oil residue. I saw a beautiful Model 41 damaged from being stored in a case lined with grey foam when the foam broke down from the gun oils. After the foam broke down, the resulting material was highly corrosive and attacked the finish of the pistol. The owner said the whole process happend over the course of a few years.
