I recently re-located and am looking for a good trainer for defensive handgun training in the Acadiana area, but would be willing to travel some if the training is good enough. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Paul Howe (plankowner and former Command Master Sergeant of Delta, veteran of the Battle of the Black Sea as discussed in the book/movie "Black Hawk Down") has a school near Nacogdoches, Texas (http://www.combatshootingandtactics.com/).

You would have a hard time finding someone with better credentials, even looking at an area much larger than Louisiana/East Texas.

Well... $200/day is ballpark price for any nationally known/world class instructor. And IMHO/IME it's worth the price. It's something you will do for a day or three days or a week, not every day for the rest of your life.

And if you want to train with Paul, best get on the stick...

Understood, but I just retired after 20 years as Airborne Infantry. I was looking for something more geared towards civilian self-defense, not "operator training". I'm pretty sure I won't be engaging any targets with an M4 or an M-14 again any time soon. That kind of stuff is behind me. I don't mind paying for quality training, but it has to be relevant training

Try Krav Maga Worldwide.

They now are getting into that and have beginning and intermediate hand gun classes.

From the looks of it they teach most of the standard stuff you see trainers teach. But the classes are $100.

Thanks, I'll take a look at their program. It turns out I found one of Rob Pincus Combat Focus Shooting courses in Houston next month, but I think I'll be on a job that weekend.

Look up Bearco Training in Covington. Kendrick Barrett runs it and teaches Pincus's Combat Focus Training and does a very good job. Very reasonable prices, quality training and much closer to you than Nacodoches. He offers many different course, pistol, rifle and shotgun, etc so you can choose what you think fits your needs the best.

Thanks, guy.... I found a link to his website yesterday afternoon while looking at the CFS site. He looks like just what I'm looking for.

Howe offers just about anything you might want, from home defense right on up.

Most of his courses however...... demand prerequisite training (generally at least a 2 day basic pistol/rifle course from a reputable firm/person).

He has a good number of instructional tapes available if you don't want to actually attend a class.

I've been meaning to get over to Nacogdoches for a while anyway, Joe R. Lansdale lives there. I'll stop and check him (Howe) out when I do, but to be honest, I'm just a little burned out on the whole Army thing after 2 decades, and going right back to that type of training (and paying someone for it to boot) doesn't really appeal to me that much.

What you would get from Paul isn't just "Army training" ... I haven't ever personally seen him at work on the range, but I do know his contemporary, Kyle Lamb. I'd imagine what they teach is far different from what you are expecting... depending on where you got your Army training, of course.

I get over to Nacogdoches I'll check him out, but for now, Bearco is closer and it looks more like what I was looking for. Thanks, though.

Yes, Joe is a friend of mine. I actually received a good bit of my Martial Arts Training under him (most folks don't know he is not just a writer).

If you get to 'Nac" be sure and stop by Howe's place and take a look around. Its on Press Road right off the loop, easy to find.

Shen Chuan, huh? Rick Riordan made mention of his school in one of his novels; the characters were speculating on what level of brutality it would take to get a person asked to leave Joe Lansdale's school, LOL.
I've been working out at Tim Credeur's Gladiator Academy. Not as self-defense oriented as I'd like, but definitely intense.

Yes, primarily Shen Chuan, but also Aikibujitsu, Combat Hapkido, Small Circle Jujitsu, Modern Arnis Stick and Knife, Shen Chuan Cane and a smattering of others.

It's not a Dojo for the faint of heart, but if you can stick it out, you'll be trained well (and realistically).

But we're getting off subject.

Flint.
