Telling the English they were wrong about confiscating all weapons is like trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
Glad my ancestors left the Western Marches in the early 1600's. Border country would probably aggravate my allergies anyway.

-ing-credible. I dont believe what I am reading. Those people (those who commented) are morons. Maybe what I posted will sink in, but I doubt it. You cant change society with a paragraph, especially when that country isnt your own.

My unsolicited opinion is that the Brits--Bless 'em--need more widespread determination to defend themselves against enemies domestic. But that's only this Yank's opinion.

The Brits have been tinkering around with their present system of government for over 700 years if my memory is correct (they'll get it right eventually ). It apparently serves them well as there doesn't seem to be a new Cromwell on the horizon.
I doubt they are going to listen to anything any American is going to say about gun control. They don't seem to be any more inclined to listen to foreign opinions than are we Americans, and since our rate of murder committed with firearms is so much higher than theirs they mistakenly assume we have little if any credibility on the issue.
There's value in speaking the truth and offering polite suggestions, but I wouldn't invest much hope in the British listening to anything we have to say.

It strikes me that the Brits have lost the quality that it takes to accept responsibility for one's own security. They have been so dependent for so long on government, perhaps they've just lost the ability to take charge of their own lives.
I note the same pattern of emotional hand-wringing in those comments as accompanies a CCW debate in the US. Perhaps the Brits should look at how well those arguments have held up to reality?

Dear Lord my family has had to fight those people over and over. I am thankful they grow ignorant of weaponry. They will be soft and easy to kill in any potential future war.
Now if we could just disarm their governments!!!

I have a good friend who is an expat Brit. married to my wife's best friend. His younger sister came over to visit for the holidays and we had an outing for dinner.
Somehow the topic of guns and crime came up, I think it was because I mentioned to another friend along for dinner, who's Russian that we can get Mosin-Nagants dirt cheap here. (He was all excited that I owned an M44 carbine)
She admitted crime was on the rise in the UK, but blamed it all on the "Yardies", the black Carribian drug gangs. According to her, if it weren't for them, things wouldn't be nearly as bad there.
Everyone just nodded thier head and moved onto another topic of conversation. (My wife was trying to kick me under the table, but was too far away and had to do it with her eyes ) Since my friends sister was being "light" about her dissaproval guns, and was being freindly and not butting heads with me, I let it slide. I wasn't about to tilt at windmills and ruin everyone's time.
But I sat back for the rest of dinner and wondered what everyone's reaction would be if I had said "America's crime problem would be a lot better if we could just get rid of all "minority group X".
I suspect everyone would have been looking at me like I was wearing a pointy hat and a sheet. Amazing how the rules change when you're a young liberal female college student from another contry.

I wonder what the people who responded to the article will say if the current trends continue, and the American murder rate becomes lower than the british murder rate. Will they say that it's purely coincidence and it's just because those american cowboys killed all the poor innocent murderers? BTW, is it unbelievable to anyone else that 53% of home invasions over there take place while people are home!? I can't imagine that so many people look at that statistic and say "nope, nobody should be able to own guns."

Frankly, and with apologies to freedom-loving Brit's ... we're better off if they continue down this path. As noted above, eventually their crime stat's will make it crystal clear what a miserable failure their experiment really is.
While it is never possible to purely compare societies, it will weaken the anti-self defense argument as the UK continues down this hopeless path.
