Looking for a home defense, range gun. I'm looking at either a Beretta 92 9mm or a Kimber 1911. I know most people like one or the other and not both, but I like both guns. I like the feel of the big grip on the Beretta and I also like the slim grip on the 1911. I'm in California so I don't carry and mag capacity is an issue, although I can fit 13 or so 9mm in the .40cal mags. I also enjoy shooting them both! What do you think? Thanks

Both will do the job. Which one do you shoot best? Will there be others besides yourself (e.g. parents, wife, children) who might have to handle the weapon in an emergency? If so, pick the one they can handle.

I don't have either gun specifically, so I'm not going to comment on model specifics. But generally, consider this: 9mm is a heck of a lot cheaper than 45ACP and it's arguably easier to shoot(in a full size gun like the Beretta 92) so you'll be able to get more practice in.

When I bought my CZ-75B, it was for the very reasons you are considering and it served me well as my only handgun for quite a while. Much later I bought 1911s and those are presently my primary HD/CCW handguns with the '75B now as my primary range gun. I enjoy shooting both very much. I'll bet eventually you will get both also.

If you really have just those two as favored choices I'd have to pick the Kimber. 9 mm ammo is a lot cheaper than .45 but if you can afford the Kimber then you can afford to feed it. And the mag limit here in CA negates much of the 9 mm benefit.

Have you fired both at a range? I really can't see liking them both equally.
