Something I came across.

When traveling with equipment such as firearm, audio-visual, or camera cases you need extra security when checking it with the airlines.

The SearchAlert TSA Heavy Duty Case Lock is the only TSA approved heavy duty travel lock on the market which is specifically designed for air travel with firearm or other equipment cases. This heavy duty case lock alerts you with the patented green light/red light window if your lock (and case) were opened by the TSA.

I thought for guns TSA had to ask you to open the case in front of them, that they weren't supposed to open the case without you present?

At any rate, there's a reason I avoid flying as much as possible...

Neat! I've always just used cheap colored zip ties to do the tamper evident thing through airports, though. Seems cheaper.

I'd hate to lose a couple of ten dollar luggage locks!

You get the pretty lock with the red/green light for the OUTSIDE luggage...not for securing your firearm.

You firearms case should be secured with a Masterlock, to which only YOU have the keys.

Ha! I bought one of those to lock my work toolkit when flying. Notice that one feature of the lock is that TSA can't remove their key until the padlock has been re-locked? Well, apparently some TSA screener wasn't bright enough to figure that one out and thought his key was stuck in the lock. He broke the lock apart, put the pieces inside a rubber glove and put the glove inside my toolkit.

The "need" for crap like this calls into question the entire existence TSA. It seems to me if stuff can disappear from your luggage after they take control of it, a bomb could just as easily appear in it afterwards!

The only time I've ever had anything stolen from my luggage was when I had the mis-fortune of needing to do international travel with an Iranian-American co-worker October 2001, who was a much better sport about the whole thing than I was. The "heightened security" was just more opportunity to steal!

You are not supposed to allow anyone access to firearms, so this would break the TSAs own rule.

From their own website, among other places:

We recommend that you provide the key or combination to the security officer if he or she needs to open the container. You should remain present during screening to take the key back after the container is cleared.
