I am looking at picking up a 308 with iron sights I have narrowed my interest to these two a savage hog hunter or the savage scout ,
between these two what is your opinion ?
I do like the simplicity of the hog hunters internal magazine , I also like the scouts aperture sight, accustock, and the magazine is the same as my model 10 fcp sr ,
I keep going back and fourth on this choice ,

Just bought the Hog Hunter this week. It’s nice addition to my other Savages. My next purchase will be an M110 Scout. Why? Why not?! 8^)

Between those I'd go with the Hog Hunter. I've had a Savage Scout, it costs more and I paid for features I never used. I'd not let the lack of irons influence my decision. I'd buy the rifle I wanted and add sights later if I had to have them. Personally I've come to the conclusion that they are just in the way. And it isn't that hard nor expensive to have them installed, plus you'd likely get better sights anyway.

I have a Savage Scout and a blind mag Savage. I like them both. Different tools for different jobs. If I'm packing into the wilderness for 4 days, I'm taking the blind mag rifle because I can't lose a magazine. If I'm chasing packs of pigs near a road, give me the scout with higher capacity mags.

I have not fired either, but have held the hog hunter at the LGS and really liked the fit and ergonomics of the gun. Sights were easy to use and in the right place, the bolt handle was a good size and shape, and the gun seemed to have the basics very well covered.

Do you have to run the rounds through to unload the Hog Hunter or does it have a drop down floor plate?
I have the hog hunter. It's a blind magazine , no floorplate. I have worked with scout platforms, and for me, I prefer conventional scopes. I dipped my stock in a camo pattern, and I run a suppressor. All in all it's a great rifle.

The Savage website has the new Hog Hunter models with detachable mags. I will be getting one this year in a .308. I want a rifle with open sights so if I end up doing something to my scope while at hunting camp I can take it off and still hunt.

I’ll end up putting something like a 1-4 or 1.5-5 (max) on my HH. Right now it just has the open sights.

If I were to leave it only iron sights I would go with the Scout for the peep sights. I’m more accurate with them compared to the notch and post style. But I’m quicker with the notch.
The new Scouts also come with adjustable comb heights, which would be helpful if you ever did want to put a scope on it.

Honestly, I can't really help. See, I'm waaay behind the ball on guns these past 30 years. But just FYI here goes my history. I fired a lot of .308 during my army service, which doesn't apply. I used to own a nice little Mauser rechambered to .308. I really liked that rifle but lost it in a trade. I still have a Savage M99A in .308 and love it! Neither is available except as used, maybe; just wanted to post on this good thread. :uhoh:

Thanks all,
I think I may go with the hog hunter and down the road I can mount a 2x7 scope it the traditional spot , if I wanted to put a scope on the scout down the road I don’t know how I would like a forward mounted scout scope.

Forward mount takes some getting used to.
I found it is very fast for under 50 yd shots, however over that I prefer the standard mounting position
