well I am inching for a new bolt action rifle in 223 or 308 keep racking my mind on this ?
I have AR's and 2 308 bolt guns now what I am going back and forth on is should I get a bolt action 223 or another 308 but with iron sights like the savage hog hunter or scout , I like both calibers and reload for both while I do want an iron sighted 308 I also
do not own a 223 bolt action It will be used for target and plinking out to 300 yards I can pick one but like both what would you guys pick, I don't need either just an itch for a new something

With an intention to use the rifle for iron sighted plinking, for the sake of iron sighted plinking, a 223rem would make far more sense to me than a 308.

However, buying a rifle for the sake of buying a rifle might not make a lot of sense in general, when that money could be spent towards training or ammo.

I don't have a great love of either cartridge, but for plinking and targets I'd choose the .223 simply because it's cheaper and less fatiguing to shoot. I don't know if the flatter trajectory would be a benefit to an open sighted gun, but it couldn't hurt either.
I'd probably look for a 700adl or something similar with sights, unless u really wanted a mini action
Even tho I enjoy my 527, I think your paying a lot of premium specifically for a mini (Which I was more than willing to do), and if you don't really need/want it, might as well save some cash and get kicked even less.

.223 bolt, for 300 yd fun it'll run just fine, and you'll get more rounds in before fatigue sets in;)

I own both a Mossberg MVP in .223 and a Savage scout rifle in .308. Both are great rifles and will do their part with good ammo providing I do my part. The MVP I have did not come with iron sights so it is scoped. The scout rifle I have shot with irons and with a scope. I also use the scout rifle for hunting.

If I were going to pick one for purely target shooting I would go with the bolt action .223. The ammunition is cheaper even for reloaders and you can shoot it longer without getting worn out or beat up. I can only take shooting .308 for so long and then I am done. I can shoot .223 all day.

thanks for all the opinions , one reason I am looking into this is prices are so low now the hog hunter is on sale $399 the ruger american ranch and predator on sale $349 and the
savage 11 trophy hunter on sale $399 with a $50 rebate = $349 ,
even seen AR's factory built on sale $400 ish we are in good times right now it was not long ago prices were much higher on guns, ammo and reloading supplys IF you could find what you wanted
so I figure why not add one more to the safe, I will need to decide by the end of the week or so while the sales are going on at my lgs

thanks

I was really interested in the hog hunter until I actually held one. I did not like the balance of the gun. It seemed very front heavy.
