I'm looking to buy my first hunting rifle. At first I had decided on what I considered to be the Lexus of rifles, a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe. But then I kept on reading and decided that a Toyota would be just as good as a Lexus (and beside, as so many others have said, the deer won't know the difference). So, instead of a $1,800+ rifle I decided to go cheaper but still get quality. I've already decided on some of the features I want the riffle to have…

1) Bolt Action
2) .270 Win. caliber
3) Synthetic Stock
4) Stainless Barrel

These are the four rifles I'm trying to decide on:

1) Weatherby Vanguard 2 ~$625
2) Remington 700 SPS ~$660
3) Winchester 70 Ultimate Shadow SS ~$770
4) Remington 700 Mountain SS ~$885
(* All prices are taken from CheaperThanDirt.com so they would also include a fee for FFL transfer and shipping.)

Thanks,
John

i have no experience with the weatherby

both the remingtoin and the winchester will be fantastic firearms {for any level shooter!}
with the edge going to the winchester.

the rifles that fn manufacturing is putting out in winchesters name are pure works of quality

I know it's not on your list, but I'ma gonna suggest it anyhow, Savage model 16. Honestly any Savage with Accu-trigger. Affordable, Accurate as all get out, and a model to fit every need. If you haven't looked at them, do yourself a favor.

I've got three Weatherby Vanguard Series 2, in .223, .308 and .257 WBY. All easily exceed Weatherby's sub-MOA guarantee. Go with the Weatherby, you won't be disappointed.

I've been reading and hearing so many great things about the new Winchester Model 70's that would be my pick. But I would upgrade a bit to the Extreme Weather SS for the upgraded Bell & Carlson stock it has with the aluminum bedding block. For an extra couple hundred bucks & 2oz of weight compared to the Ultimate Shadow you'd have what looks to be the ultimate synthetic stocked M70 available. IMHO you're so close to perfection compared to what you're looking at now I couldn't imagine stopping short.

vanguard is same action as a howa 1500, so there might be a deal there for you. but I'd go find one of those new ruger american's in stainless, of the encore, or a savage.

Gotta love THR. Guy asks for advice on four specific rifles, and the the cheapskates show up suggesting entry level rifles.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

I will take the advice and go hold them in-store and see how I like the way the fit/feel. Although it looks like I'm leaning toward the Weatherby Vanguard 2; I held a Vanguard 2 Deluxe a while back and liked the way it felt, so unless the other three feel that much better, and given the responses so far, I will most likely go with the Vanguard 2.

I will post back when I finally get one.

I have a Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow in .270WSM and am reasonably happy with it. I own an older Vanguard Varmint Special in .223 and it is decent, and the S2 models have nicer stocks and better triggers, also a Howa 1500 Lightning in 6.5x55 that has been finicky from day one. Also own a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .223 that is the most accurate rifle I own.
So my order of preference, were I to be in your shoes would be:
Winchester Model 70 Ultimate Shadow
Remington 700 SPS
Weatherby Vanguard S2
Remington 700 Mountain Rifle
That being said, I will also confess that my new Marlin X7 in .270 Win (purchased at local store for $249.95) has thus far been more consistently accurate than my Model 70. And the Marlin sports a Nitrex TR-1 scope $99.95 from natchezss.com; while the Model 70 wears a Zeiss Conquest.) So it was the Marlin that collected the mulie doe in Montana last fall.
YMMV

I'm going to recommend the Win Mod 70. Caliber is right on for North American game. I've shot everything from sheep to moose with my .270 and one shot was all I needed. Since I carried mine in the Alaskan Bush, I preferred a utilitarian rifle that I didn't care about getting scratched up. Mine is a Pre-64 Featherweight but I never felt under-gunned.

My choice would be the Weatherby Vanguard. It's a very fine rifle for the price.

Of the choices - Vanguard. But I'd really suggest a Tikka for the same money as you're looking to spend on the presented choices.

i would (and did) go with the winchester m70, although i chose an extreme weather in 30-06. the fn made winchesters are fantastic for a factory gun.

I own an older Weatherby Vanguard lightweight. It's a great rifle, but I wished I'd have gone with a Tikka instead.

After their Sandy Hook shenanigans, I will never give Cheaper Than Dirt a single dime of my money.
