broken,
Good chance the ball detent is rusted or gummed up.
A good soak should take care of it.
Some where around 1950, The "loading gate" became an "inspection gate"

I had an Iver Johnson for a few years, back when..........
If I recall correctly there was what looked like a bolt, sticking out on the front of the frame, near the center pin and perpendicular to it.
You had to push in on the bolt to release the center pin.
If you have a bolt about there you might try to depress it and push-pull back & forth to see if that helps.
The pin will move only about 1/4 to 3/8/ inch without depressing the bolt.

This may or may not be similar to your H&R..............
Hope it helps.:)

well i let her soak overnight in 3/1 oil -i know, all i had,put a piece of leather over the pin with a pair of plyers, finally got it out.put it back in after a good oiling and it is stuck again.??i went to the local gun shop and found an identical pistol and they let me pull the pin in and out of it,they told me their gunsmith would take a look at her if i cant figure it out. update..the pin is coming out with a pair of plyers now,it wasnt even doing that, that detent ball in the frame is real stiff.just keep oiling her and i think it is gonna loosen up. thanks.
