They told Reagan (who was apprehensive to sign it with that provision) they could beat it in court.......And here we are.
Piecing together what happened is difficult because the nra goes out of it's way to NOT talk about what happened in 1986, in a way that honestly makes it look like they have a lot to hide. I can't find a peep on any nra website. It's as if 1986 didn't happen.
That being said, I have to say wow Gunnerpalace, I hadn't heard that they told Reagan that. Ho-ly smoke man, if that is true then, woa. I was always under the impression that Reagan not only didn't care about NFA owners but he was glad to sign the ban. Holy sh**. There is a real possibility that Reagan didn't care and that he believed the nra when they said they could beat it in court.
I think it bears repeating, especially as you look at what I just wrote, that there sure is a lot of secrecy about what happened in 1986. The secrecy ALONE is enough for gun owners to be demanding answers from the nra before they send in membership checks. Furthermore, the secrecy is so bad that for years I didn't even know about Hughes' involvement or that it was called the Hughes amendment (despite my attempts at research). If it weren't for Gun Owners of America, and their newsletter I was reading, I wouldn't have ever heard of it. This whole thing just pisses me off.
They never ever filed or even put a token bill forward in Congress.
Yes, I've heard that from many sources over the years. There is a real possibility that the Hughes amendment was never even legally passed. Somebody needs to do a thorough investigation of the mclure/hughes/nra treason in 1986, put it all in one place, whether it be book or website so we can get the truth out to gun owners.
A sincere thank you to all the NFA owners who have posted in this thread and shed light on the massive treason which has gutted our rights.
