I've read about the small general store that also carries sportsmans supplies, but here in seacoastal Maine and New Hampshire, I had never been in one....

Until today, I just stopped in at Suds N' Soda groceries in Greenland NH, and discovered that they had a rather nice hunting and fishing department, it wasn't as big as Kittery trading post's but it was a very nice little set up, mainly hunting rifles, shotguns, black powder, and Rimfire

Their prices on firearms were very reasonable, they had a Ruger 10/22 in a green laminated carbine stock for $220ish, h&r single shot shotguns around $180

And, wonder of wonders they actually had a decent amount of ammo, relative to the store size, Unfortunately they had no 22 LR ammunition the clerk said that sold out as quickly as it came in but they had a decent selection of the most common hunting and general purpose ammo, like .45 auto, 357, 38 special, .223, 30-06, .30-30, and a wide selection of shotgun shells....

Let me tell you there's just something satisfying about going to a general store to get some snacks, and also picking up a box of ammunition at the same time!

I can see this store becoming a new favorite very quickly, it's a great little store in Greenland New Hampshire and I'm surprised it took me this long to find it

Very cool! Support them and help keep that stuff available. When I was growing up in my OK hometown, one of the best sources in town was a drugstore!

Yeah, there's still lots of real old style general stores that actually sell gun stuff, once you get out into the hinterlands. :)

There's a place near my office that's an OLD corner store with a tiny lunch counter, candy, snacks, cans of soup, bags of chips and sodas ... and a liquor rack behind the register with the top two shelves devoted to ammunition.

And I also occasionally stop in another small town nearby where there's a tiny, kind of dilapidated breakfast & lunch shop in an old store front, with three booths, six counter stools, a short order cook, a couple dim and dusty aisles of hunting, fishing, and household-type convenience goods that don't look like they've moved in 30 years (bottles of Prell shampoo and Brylcream), and a couple rifles and shotguns in a rack near their framed FFL license on the wall.

That stuff isn't common in the modern world, but outside of the strip mall and shopping center areas you can still find it.

The grocery store I go to in Anchorage [Fred Meyer] has a gun department right in the store, well stocked including ARs, mine 14's and any handgun you can think of. And ammo. All at good prices. I can put my new .357 or AR in the same grocery cart as my pork chops and potato's.
And this is very much in the city. And Fred Meyer is by no means a mom and pop. It's a big nation wide store.

Heh. My wife noticed this when we recently went back to the upper Midwest and got out in the country to go fishing with the folks ... Every gas station mini-mart and all the little-bitty country stores not only had the usual stuff, but sold bait, tackle ammo and many sold fishing and hunting licenses as well.

As I remarked to the wife, "It's great to be back in America." (Just don't see enough of this stuff out here on the semi-commie West Coast.)

However, our Puget Sound area Fred Meyer stores recently opened up gun counters and started selling ammo again, so maybe the worm has turned ...

We to have a general store here that carry's a wide variety of supply's form fuel vehicles or home the farm ranch , to work cloths and boots and hunting cloths and camo boots. They stock on display around 450 firearms all at 10% over there cost and who know how many in the back room. Even some froze foods along with normal staples and dry goods. While there getting your firearm ready you can get a fresh made sandwich too. Hard to go there and not find something you don't really need but gota buy anyhow.

S&W call to ask them if they could come and have some kind of big to do next month with all the firearms they offer.

Same thing in coastal NC. I've got three near me (within 15 minutes) that are not full-blown gunshops, but have a nice selection of hunting/fishing gear and ammo. I enjoy stopping there from time to time to pick up a box or two.

We used to have a general store on the St. Mary's River (fl side) that sold ammo from .22 to .30-06 and buckshot. They had groceries to gas. I don't know if it's still in business, but I may have to make a road trip.

Until we finally got Lowe's and Home Depot out here, I'd never seen a small-town Texas hardware store that DIDN'T sell ammo and maybe a rifle or three. You know, it's WEIRD when you ask the lumber dept guy if the sporting goods are somewhere near paint, or lawn and garden? 'Cuz I can't find 'em, the place is so BIG... and he says yeah, sorry, we don't HAVE that here... I know it's funny, but the company won't let 'em carry ammo.

Ask the manager, some new guy in town from New Jersey, which nail gun he suggests for rodents, am he thinks WE'RE the strange ones...

I love going to New Hampshire from Massachusetts...seems like every town sells guns and fireworks, and the state sells booze. And no sales tax.
It's a male fantasy world. ;)

I came across a store like that on the way back from a job interview in VA. I was hopelessly lost and stopped there looking for a map. They didn't have any... but they did have a gun counter right next to the bakery counter. You could literally buy a fresh donut, then wander over and buy an AR carbine. Not a bad place.

I was on a job in South Carolina, and I stopped in at an Ace Hardware. The gun department was the biggest section of the store.

I really enjoyed seeing that, being from IL. LOL

They had hunting clothing and the like as well. Kind of like a mini Cabela's.

Today I was shopping at the closest grocery store (8miles away) and after buying milk, eggs, butter and meat I wandered over to the shotgun slug case and bought a box, upstairs is their "gun room" where I've bought a few handguns and a crossbow over the years. A very relaxed setting in which to shop with full sized mounts adorning the freezer cases and heads on the walls. :)

When I travel for work, stopping at stores like this have been great sources for finding out of the way gun shops.
Great to pick up some .38LRN and a box of .22 while waiting on a biscut too.

Recently stopped by a store I last went to in the winter of 1981. The son was still there his father, the owner in 81, had passed away. We had breakfast and talked of the area 30 years ago, fun for us both.
Same general store with a hunting/fishing section, some the old faded yellow plastic packages had been hanging there for years, next to a couple of video games(that were new since 81). Other side of the room is a diner.

When he found out I was into hunting deer, he gave me the name of a blueberry grower that needed some help controling the white tail population.
Out of state and a bit far to drive but a nice gesture all the same.

Hope I'm sent out that way again soon.

It might be fun to own and operate such a place. Folks would drop in for a cup of coffee, a fresh sausage biscuit or a donut, the latest local scuttlebutt, and ammo.

Sign on the door would read:

Folks are welcome to carry firearms here--and most do. Just saying...

Driving through Alabama, seemed every rural gas station sold ammo as well as other travelers needs.

One of the few perks of traveling a hundred mile radius from the shop I work at is that I get to check out a lot of gun stores, pawnshops, etc. If I see a sign indicating guns or ammo, I stop and check it out.

Recently, while in Crossville I passed a marine center that had a pawn and gun sign. I turned around and checked it out. Turns out they had .22 wmr in stock, so I picked up a box, looked around, and chatted with the owner for a few minutes. He had a really nice Python in the counter, but wanted $1475 for it.

My wife used to work at a video rental store that also carried archery supplies, ammo, and gun powder. It was an odd combination of products until you knew that the owner's son was into archery. They also had the best selection of hunting videos I've ever seen. When the store went out of business, they sold all the ammo and powder for half price, and I cleaned out all their 30-30 for $5 a box.

As the big box stores keep expanding, it's getting harder to find those small niche stores that carry guns and ammos along with their regular products, so when I run across them, I try to throw some business their way.

Heh, I just remembered that our local John Deere dealership has a rather large gun counter and sells gun safes too!

And our local Walmart is now carrying long guns and reloading supplies, I recently bought two pounds of Reloder 19 powder there.

There's a place not too far from where I live that's a modern BP gas station with a McDonalds in the back. You know. The place that doesn't allow concealed carry in places they can prevent it. Cheap food, plastic furniture and people - you've been there when you were desperate.

The gas station has a section around beside the main counter. They sell guns there. Handguns, ammo, you name it. I've bought a lot of ammo from them in fact.

That's something you don't see everyday. A McDonalds and a gun shop under the same roof.

If you want to see the place it's located at these coordinates. I'm not sure if they still sell guns there. It's been a while since I was there but they certainly did sell them for a long time. Just put these numbers into a Google Map search and you'll find it.

When I read the title of the post, it made me think of the scene in "Summer of '42" where the kid goes into the drug store to buy "protection".
