I have a M&P 15-22 that the kids and I love to shoot. Not really excited with the factory sights for the kiddos. Was wanting a decent holographic site for the gun. Do not want to spend a ton of money on one since it is just a 22, but want something that is accurate.

If it's just a .22 for the kids, get a Leapers tube-style red dot or something. I have one I use on an AK-74 and it works fine. Cost all of $30, totally worth it.
Look up Primary Arms. They have a few low priced red dots. For an AR a proper heigh riser/mount would be nice. Primary Arms sells them to. Even as combos. I plan on getting a PA combo red dot for my 15-22.
Truglo has some nice cheap red dots.
I agree with TonyAngel. Most cheap holographics are total junk.
You could save up and get the Eotech XPS rimfire. It is in the mid $300 range. That is the only holographic i would look at. Otherwise, red dots.

I'm not aware of any actual holographic sights other than the Eotechs and whatever the Bushnell version of the Eotech was called. There are some Eotech lookalikes on the market, but they are cheaply made red dots intended mostly for the Airsoft market I think.
All Eotechs are a bit spendy ($300-$500). If you don't want to spend that much, the Vortex and Primary Arms knockoffs of Aimpoints are reportedly pretty good for $100-$150.
The big problem with cheap Walmart red dots is parallax. If your eye is not centered in the lens, parallax issues can cause the dot to be several inches off from the point of aim. Aimpoint corrects for parallax with a lens between the eye and the reflecting surface, and Eotech corrects for parallax via the hologram. You will not have that correction on a $29.95 Tasco, though.

If you are looking for a Holographic sight, then I would go ahead with an Eotech XPS2-RF (rimfire). It is designed for the .22 and other rimfire calibers.
At around $350, it isn't cheap, but it is as cheap as I would go for a holographic. If you don't want to spend that much, then I would say go for a red-dot sight like a Vortex.

I have the vortex strikefire on my Sig 522. Works great! Even in bright sunshine no problem!
It has an auto shutoff as well.
I shoot steel plates with it. Great fun!
