Home Invasion vs. No Knock Warrant. How Would You Know?

home invasion proof/no knock slow down

I think the only way to solve this problem would be to harden your doors and windows and have video linked to your bedroom. That way it will take a little longer for your door or windows to be breached and while you arm yourself, you can see who's doing the knocking and respond appropriately.

Cops, become completely compliant and don't present a target.
BG: well, you know the answer to that one.

I would expect if it were the police it would be A BUNCH of police. Most of the home invasions in Memphis are between one and four BG's, a quick head count before you start shooting could save a life.

I dont know all the local Sherriffs or deputies but I daresay that most know me. They sit in my driveway and catch kids doing 90 mph down my street. Two know I am armed 99.9% of the time and on occassion have asked me to visit an elderly neighbor.
If they want to see me they just call. Get to know your elected officials people.

treo, just do what we did:

Get to know the cops at your local substation. It didn't happen overnight, but it proved to be worthwhile.

Take care out there.

Bellowing

Home invasion robberies are damn frequent here in Oregon! We have this idiotic "medical marijuana" law that lets "sick" people grow dope at home, which has fueled the rise in home invasions by punks looking for dope, money, and guns. These monsters sometimes hit random homes.

One thing that probably will identify a law-enforcement raid would be six or eight fellows bellowing loudly, "SEARCH WARRANT!". I just doubt that many criminals would do all of that bellowing to mark their presence when they want to hit and run without waking the whole neighborhood.

And one thing that will surely identify legal invaders would be a flash-bang grenade going off in your living room! Under the proposed circumstances, that would be a GOOD thing to hear!.........................elsullo

The best suggestion should be repeated:

Make sure your address is in large, well-lit letters at the front of your house.

Go down to the station and tell the Captain or lieutenant when they get ready to kick in the house next door use this photo graph of this one, not this one circled.:scrutiny:

Use a little Sun Tzu here. Think like your enemy (as much as it disgusts you).

Imagine if you (as a perp) knew a guy had a lot of money and valuables in his house, but also had guns. As you plan the home invasion, would you simply break or sneak in and hope for the best? OR would it make more sense to go in armed and with bright flashlights.... and yell "FREEZE POLICE!" to confuse your victim and make him hesitate? :scrutiny:

never seen more than 4 guys on a home invasion never seen less than 8 on a raid. and contrary to the fantasies some of you have walter mitty'd a real swat raid will happen so fast you ill never know what hit you. between the flash bangs and the way they mob you its like getting caught in a real big breaking wave. i've been on the recieving end of 2 one a drug raid and the second a man with a gun and possible hostages. we were wide awake for the dope raid and couldn't have done much if so inclined. the second one there were 3 of us holding this dimwit down when the cops hit the door. they had all of us cuffed and prone in about 3-5 seconds they sorted it out and let us go in about 10 mins. best you can wish for is that hte guys who hit you be good and well trained. the proper execution keeps everyone safe. if a gun goes off its considered a failure

cassandrasdaddy,

Your "receiving end" knowledge of this stuff is kind of creepy. I'm not sure I want to ask how it happened, but your experience does not mean that every experience will be the same. There are plenty of news stories proving otherwise.

Also, the "You have the wrong house" sign doesn't seem to be a very plausible idea, whoever said that; basically that doesn't tell the cops anything. A dope dealer could do that too.

Our front door is steel. Also at night it is reinforced with a propped bar so you would have to actually break it off at both hinges to get it open. Not an easy task even for a battering ram. In any event it would give me ample time to prepare.

There really isn't any way to know, you've gotta go by your instincts.

I myself would be shooting at anyone forcefully entering my house, no matter what they shout, until I could tell that they were law enforcement.

Here in the Dallas area we still have a home invasion gang operating. They wear gear that says POLICE all over it. They come in yelling POLICE GET DOWN SEARCH WARRANT.

To my knowledge they have not been caught yet and have been operating about 2 years. They have been hitting Dallas and the surrounding towns where the money is.

"There are plenty of news stories proving otherwise."

and te all know how accurately those stories are done especially mr balkos unbiased scribes

i lived next door to a dope dealer back then i liked to smoke pot. was there when they raided. it happened real quick was literally over before i figured out what was happening

second one was same house dimwit had decided to beat his g/f up one of his friends and 2 of us neigbors pulled him off her and were restling with him. she ran upstairs and called cops told em he had a gun and was holding hostages. since we weren't earing our good guy uniforms they cuffed evryone to sort out details. and that was when swat was just gertting started. seen a few since then as ell as the infamous jump out squads in dc. they use the overwhelm em fast technique to good effect good for everyone. bad guys don't get as chance to get stupid

I don't think with my setup I would survive. As soon as I started to move it would be to a gun when I am first awakened. Last thought that would enter my mind would be that it was a wrong house no knock warrant.

Anyone that breaks forcefully into your home in the middle of the night is usually not there to just rob you. Your life is therefore immediately in danger, and deserves the appropriate response. I guarendamnteeya that there would be multiple people down, unfortunately I would most likely be one of them along with my wife. I am sure there would be a pile of brass on the bed though!

By the same logic ...
There are two possible situations:
A)
You wake up the entire neighborhood as well as the homeowner.
The police are called within a minute of your entering.
If you get what you want, you have a few thousand worth of goods.
If caught you have home invasion, murder(of the confused victim who hesitated and you presumable shot), etc.
More expensive to make this situation work.
Far more likely to be shot by the homeowner if he gets a chance, which is probable if you don't have SWAT equipment and manpower to get in fast enough.

B)
The neighbor hood isn't woken up, the homeowner may be.
If the homeowner wakes up(and it depends how far into the burglary), the police are called then. If he doesn't wake up, the police are not called.
Same amount of gain if you get away with the loot.
If you are caught, after reading Jeff's post it looks like the charge could be burglary and not home invasion, no murder charge, etc.
Any perp can do this.

Which of these sounds more attractive?

Trisha makes an EXCELLENT point. Contact the PD (if you are in the city) or SO and calmly express your concerns. Trust me, they want a bad no-knock as much as you (not at all) and if you come to them and talk calmly about your concerns, it WILL help. In addition, your input on what 's going on next door will assure them of your innocence.

I'll bet they will also make suggestions like one previous poster that you have LARGE and easily found house numbers. :D

Cops can READ.

The problem is with potential clerical errors. how easy is it to slip up and type in "756 Jefferson street" instead of 755?

wow good topic
hmm i think id shoot , yes i realize id probably be in jail if they did turn out to be cops, but my belief is they can at least knock

Arfin's suggestion about putting a sign on the front door was a good one ... How 'bout "Hey, 5-0: No bad guys here, check next door!"

Seriously, Trisha and Pat-inCO were helpful in saying it's good to get to know your local cops, but then, our OP, Mr. Treo, has famously remarked in the past, "Treo don't talk to cops." At least, though, he's moved on from his previous fixation, which was getting pulled over for a traffic stop while carrying by one of his local rogue cops.

As far as being the victim of a no-knock warrant served on the wrong house, I suspect one has a better chance of winning the Powerball lotto ...

I don't know anyone that has ever won the lotto... but I did watch the local SD do the conga line of death into the wrong side of a duplex by mistake.

Be on friendly terms with your local PD

Visit your local police department.
Ask for a ride-along.
Take your kids down to get a tour of the station.
Make friends with the cop that lives down the street - invite his family over for dinner sometime.
Go to PD fund raisers.

An ounce of prevention and all that...

I was concerned about this for two years before I sold that house, and moved up into a ruraL area. Now I know for sure niether of my meibors who both live at least 100M away, are criminals because I know them both perosnally. Anyway, the house I sold in town was in a nice neiborhood but a family moved in next door and it was a total case of "there goes the neiborhood". Pot deals in front of MY HOUSE by the neibor kid at all times of the weekend and at night. I once walked out to confront him after the third time and said look *******, if you want to smoke your weed don't buy that crap in front of my house or Ill call my Narco buddy the next time! He quit buying in front of my house, and started to buy in front of his moms house next door!
I was allways expecting a knock or none on my door and a possible firearms confrontation because of it from the police. I would have under the circumstyances made sure of the fact it was either freind or foe first.

The kid ended upp getting arrested a blcok away for possession but was out within a few hours and RIGHT back to his addiction then next day!
