So i went back home this weekend. To give you some background: 21 college student, live off campus in an apartment, pay 95%-99% of my bills....but going home (parents' house), just 25 minutes from the apartment, is kind of nice. Laundry, home cooked meals. Well they were gone for the weekend and I kind of appointed myself as house sitter.

So my future roomate came back with me tonight, as well as with her boyfriend, after some apartment searching and grilled out. My parents came home a little later and we started to catch up. My mom was asking what my week was like, so i told her I was working most of the week, class tuesday, Thursday...then I mentioned I had a class all day in Lancaster. So she asked what it was, to which I responded, Concealed Carry.

Well this spawned an interesting discussion. At first she didn't realize what I meant, so I had to explain that it was to carry a gun. That sparked the: you're going to carry a gun??!!? Now my mom is not anti gun...but we have never actually had guns in the house. She was fine with me all the years in scouting going and shooting for the weekend. So my friend and I went back and forth explaining all the reasons why I was doing this. I told her I also keep a gun loaded by my bedside, explaining I would rather call them at 3 am asking for a lawyer, than have them get a call at 3 am from the local leo's to ID the body. She of course asked if we really thought the OSU campus was really that dangerous. We responded by saying of course not (which I'm pretty confident in saying, as long as you are half way street smart) but it is better to be prepared. I told her I never really bought the gun with only self defense in mind, but rather target shooting. In the end I think I showed her I was pretty responsible, she was glad I was taking a class (never told her I was required by law to do it, but I plan on taking additional training courses after), glad to hear I keep the gun pretty well under lock and key when I am away from it.

Didn't really convert an anti, but I think I helped educate someone close to me who didn't have as clear an understanding.

Good job !

Every person who is at least made aware ,or given good information , regarding self defense and firearms is a plus I think. At least they don't have to aquire their opinions on the subject from just the media.

Way to go Geek! The more our loved ones are informed about our responsible ownership and carrying of arms the more they will associate guns with law abiding citizens and responsibility. Otherwise, all they get from the media is an association with criminals.
