Hoppe's pronunciation

I guess I should have just called them.

I just got off the phone with Hornady, simply to ask them how to pronounce the company name... sure enough, it's Horn-a-dee. :D

That didn't take long.

Just a chuckle. When some of our, uh.... Rustic citizens call in their classified ads in the Guns For Sale section, it can get hliarious. Someone was selling their "dear rifle with Loop Hole scope".

As long as we are on the subject . . .

The peanut butter cups that com in the orange wrapper is pronounced REE -sez not REE -seez (Reese's) Take off the 's and look at it.

Same for "Hoppe's." Take off the 's and look at it. I say "hops." Hoppys sounds as queer as Ree-seez.

I could be wrong.

I find it facinating how many of you insist these companies don't know how to pronounce their own names. The way you have mis-pronounced it for years is correct because all your buddies also mis-pronounce it? Amazing - absolutely amazing!

AMEN ! Dave T.

By the way, I decided this was going nowhere so I called Penguin Industries who used to own Hoppe's and then I called Brunswick Industries who purchased Hoppe's in 1997.

BOTH companies told me it is pronounced "hoppies" rhymes with poppies.
The lady at Penguin Industries said "hops" it what you put in beer and "hoppies" is what you put in your gun.

I figure they ought to know how to pronounce it.

As for me I respect the way a person or company wishes their name to be pronounced. Y'all can do what you want.

Hornadee - that certainly makes sense. Why does my mouth always want to say Hornaday with no justification whatsoever?

This old thread was hanging around my hard drive and I thought it might help out. Full attribution, no copyright violations...But there are a few unrelated "riffs" to get through, slog through the boilerplate and it pretty much hits the topic.

Ross

OK, a lot of what I know about guns is from reading. This is fine except that when I actually talk about guns I end up pronouncing everything wrong, or at least that is what I am told. ==== What a shock it was to find out that a Mack-uh-rov is a Mah-kar-ov. So is a carbine a car-bean (as I heard it on Leave it to Beaver) or is it a car-buy-n as I have been saying it? How about tritium is it try-t-um or trit-e-um. ==== I can use some help here. I am tired of sounding like a stooge. Feel free to add anything else I may be mispronouncing. Thanks, Skip ------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date:07/15/99-04:48Who:JohnBoy Mssg #37038: How do you pronounce.....
Skip, I've always pronounced it car'bean. But have heard it also pronounced car'bine. Soooo, your post prompted me to grab my trusty "Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary" and look it up, and, according to Webster's either pronounciation is acceptable. >>>> Tritium... again, checking the dictionary, its trit-e-um. >>>> If it makes you feel better, I've used the Mack-uh-rov pronounciation. Chalk it up to individual preference. Fun shootin'!! ~JohnBoy ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, is it 'lah-muh' or is it 'yah-muh'? ;-) The one I want to know about is Heckler and Koch. Is it 'Kotch' or 'Koke' or something else? I note that even at the gun stores, all the employees there pronounce it H/K - just like me.-FM ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date:07/15/99-11:44Who:Devin Mssg #37054: How do you pronounce.....
Here's another one for you Skip, if you didn't already know. Heckler & Koch. Heckler is sounded just like it is, but most Americans pronounce Koch as Koch, when it should sound like Coke(like the soft drink). Devin ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date:07/15/99-12:31Who:FreeMe Mssg #37058: How do you pronounce.....
Actually Devin, you answered my question. I have long suspected that the proper pronounciation is 'Coke'. What I have noticed is that regardless of which way you pronounce the full name, there will be someone in the room who will look at you as if you have 'MORON' emblazened on your forhead - hence, I say H/K.-FM ------------------------------------------------------------------------

One that always bugged me is SAKO. Most pronounce it 'say-ko' when it should be 'sock-o'. A Seiko is a watch, a SAKO is a firearm. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used to have an H&K P7M8. Once I had occasion to send it to the factory for some warranty repair. I had been told that H&K was so sensitive about the pronounciation of their name that if I got it wrong there was at least a chance that they might just hang up on me. I asked, I read, I practiced saying "Coke" with an attempt at sounding guttural and Teutonic. When I thought I was ready, I dialed the number and after a couple of rings a friendly voice answered, "Heckler and COCK, how can we help you?". I haven't worried too much about it since. Date:07/15/99-14:21Who:Don OTMW Mssg #37069: How do you pronounce.....
The problem with pronouncing foreign-designed firearms in America is that if you pronounce them properly, you sound pretentious, and if you Americanize them, you sound ignorent. The "K" in H&K for example, should be pronounced like Coke, except the 'k' is pronounced sort of sloppily, almost like clearing one's throat. Sounds great if you're yakking in a Gaststaette south of Nuernberg, but makes you sound like a putz in America. I avoid the whole thing by simply saying H&K. By the way, ever an Italian say Beretta? They don't say "Buhredda". They say, "Beh-ret-ta", with a noticeable pause between "ret" and "ta". ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heck, have you ever heard an Englishman say Jaguar? Sounds something like "jag-you-err." Now, I will freely admit that the way many folks in my area pronounce it, "jag-whar," is dead wrong. But sometimes the folks that make a product talk funny, too! ShortRound. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for clearing things up guys. Now if someone would just send a fax to Boston and tell them that Celtic is Kel-Tic, not sell-tic I may be able to put this whole issue behind me. To make matters worse, if you have a 'val-lay' park your 'shevro-lay' then do you tip with money from your 'wal-lay'? I also watched a French chef saute' some onions on a cooking show, but he pronounced it 'sote'. Later, he steamed some fresh '???-per-rag-us' spears. Oh well. Hey Don I have another one for ya'. How many times have you heard someone say "Hornaday"? I mean can people not read? It is spelled H-O-R-N-A-D-Y! Just my two cents. I think that the "v" in Russian is soft like an "f" so it would be "Mak -uh - rof" ------------------------------------------------------------------------

DonOTMW: I might be wrong but I believe "sabot" is pronounced SAH-BO (short "a"). You are correct in its origin. This IS from the French, though and it means "shoe". Actually a wooden clog worn by workers many years ago. This gave rise to the term "sabotage" as these workers, ticked off at the new-fangled machines which were taking their jobs, threw these "sabot" into the machines thereby destroying them. In the army we were taught "Say-bo", but that might have been for clarity purposes. We referred to our fin-stabilized discarding sabot rounds as "Say-bo" during the Fire Command to differentiate them from the standard solid armor piercing ammo we used. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date:07/20/99-11:52Who:ShortRound Mssg #37836: How do you pronounce.....
This isn't really a pronunciation issue (well maybe) but more of a pet peave of mine. The word "y'all" is a contraction of the two words 'you' and 'all.' As such it follows the normal rules for contractions. The aposthrophe should be placed where the letters are left out. Hence the spelling is "y'all" rather than "ya'll." The second spelling would have us pronouncing the word "yah-ull" instead of "yahl." Sorry, I feel better now.... every once in a while I have to take my pet peaves out for a walk. (grin) Sho

ShortRound. Ya'll...attempting to create a "You-plural". Can say, "Bill and Fred, I need you to..." and the you is plural, same as if I were to just address two guys, "you need to...". So we southerners came up with "Ya'll" and the center New Yorkers came up with "youse" to make a distinction between singular/plural. It's a useful word, and as many, not considered correct by the anal retentive types that worry excessivly about pronunciation; say it as you please, if they wanted it to be easy to pronounce, they'd spell it better. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clark- I THINK it is Chiefs' Special. I say that because it was introduced at a police chiefs' convension. In honor of that, it got the name. I therefore theorize that it should be plural posessive. As far as y'all goes, now that we have that down, what's with y'alls. I understand y'all's, as in "... y'all's yard is full of them danged broken down cars!", but I don't get "Are y'alls going to lunch?". Is a double plural like a double negative? -Brian ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pronounce Hoppe's

Hop eez. Emphasis on the first syllable. I think. But you mean you can actually clean your gun with it? I always just put a few dabs behind each ear before going on a date. By gar! The things one can learn in this forum. :scrutiny:

Think thats bad?

I once heard someone refer to an M4 as a "Cabaret" for the better part of 3 hears. ITS A CARBINE GOD DAMNIT!

He stopped playing counterstrike, so I didnt have to take it anymore.

My wife was blissfully sitting at a table, cleaning her revolver when...

..her elbow knocked over the *open* bottle of Hoppe's....on some CARPET!
If I told you what she called it at THAT time, Oleg would ban me for foul language.

(I ran for the garage because I just KNEW that I was gonna laugh!!!)

My name is spelled "Luxury Yacht," but it's pronounced "Throat-warbler Mangrove." (Monty Python)

My real last name is the same as a famous author (and distant relative), but he pronounces it differently. I'm continually amazed at the people who are fans of his who insist that I don't know how to pronounce my own name!
