Hornady TAP Training Ammo

Seems like a seen somewhere, Hornady 5.56 training ammo was using primed steel cases from Russia than loading their (Hornady) choice of powder with Hornady bullets. Haven't seen it or tried it yet myself.

We use it as our training ammo for our patrol rifles, M16A1s (no fun switch). I have literally seen thousands of rounds of this ammo go downrange. The only malfunctions I have seen were magazine-related (and vanished as soon as the bad mag was binned). This is not to say that there haven't been any others, just that I have not seen or heard if them. The Ordies seem quite satisfied with it, and if it was causing issues they would be griping about it, or would not continue to use it.

I just bought 3k of it myself.

Got a substantial amount of it myself and no problems with it in my rifles (the older grey steel cases) over 1,000 rounds and change downrange. Hornady like accuracy; but without the cost. Great deal.

On the flip side, I have a friend with an Armalite that has been uber-reliable and digested thousands of rounds of brass cased ammo and it won't eat the Hornady Training stuff for some reason. It fires one round and the the bolt overrides the next round. Only happens with the Hornady and happens whether it is the older grey stuff or the new lacquered cases.

Its good stuff, although last I checked M193 is about the same price.

Wolf is the best deal going now at $199 per 1k.

M193 is running at $260 per 900

Hornady TAP Training seems to be about $270 per 1k.

I've burned through a good bit of the Hornady Training ammo since I discovered it. The 75gr stuff shoots really well out of my precision rig and the 55gr stuff shoots better than M193. I guess it's due to the Hornady projectiles that they are using.

Still in all, I continue to buy Silver Bear and Wolf (just because you can get it for $200 a case now) for blasting ammo.

I've never seen a rifle over ride a steel case. That would have me tearing my hair out.

Most of the problems that I've seen with rifles that won't run on steel cased ammo is due to the rifle being over gassed.

Shot a few thousand rounds of the 55gr stuff. As Runningman said, it is literally Hornady powder and bullet loads in Barnaul factory (Brown Bear) Berdan primed lacquered steel cases - Hornady buy them from Russia.

IMO it is the best deal out there for 223 ammo. Its damn near match accurate but steel case cheap. I far prefer this over brass cased ammo, it is so consistent and the accuracy has t be experienced to be believed. Very clean burning too - bargain.

Anyone have a problem with lacquer buildup in the chamber after firing Tap or Wolf? If so what would be the maximum amount of rounds used before cleaning. Lastly What would thoroughly clean the lacquer off? I would be firing it out of a 14.5 and 16" Bushmaster chrome lined HBAR. I only wonder cause I'v been told to stay away from steel yet all the cops I know use it, and you two Moderators seem to like it.

Don't confuse TAP training ammo with Wolf or other cheap stuff. Just because they are both steel cased doesn't mean they are the same.

i have seen alot of this ammo shot and used in carbine training courses, and i have seen or heard any gripes from anyone that used it, and of course i asked and i always swap info on gear, ammo, guns, etc when i am around like minded folks.

This is an internet myth, the lacquer doesn't come off or melt. The steel cases don't expand the same as brass so you get accelerated carbon build up, but the lacquer doesn't come off, even if you hold a propane torch to it.

English?????

It's a shame that the old lacquer in the chamber myth has been busted. It seems that the steel cased stuff is now getting more expensive. I kind of liked it when no body wanted it.

Oh, I was going to order my next batch from sgcusa.com because their prices were really good, but I started reloading.
