Horrible news today

You hurt inside but keep a smile on the outside for your wonderful daughter. Stay positive, and try to live as you would if nothing has happened. Although it may be hard, you are her strength. Medical science can work wonders today, have faith in their ability. With medical backgrounds in my family, don't hesitate to E-mail me for any questions that you may have. [email protected]....Onward and Upward!... God Bless her.....;)

The most common cardiac pathologies for a child her age are murmers or inflamatory conditions of the endocardium or pericardium, usually precipitated by an infection of some kind. The endo and pericardium two of the three layers which makes up the heart. In fact nearly two thirds of the patients referred to pediatric cardiologists in my state were purely functional murmers that an estimated 70% of americans live with each day. 80% of the total number of pediatric patients required no interventions of any kind. And only 3% needed surgery.

Fortunately she has several factors working for her. Her age, a loving family, and the fact that she is still growing are a significant few of these. The signs and symptoms of these conditions can be quite troubling to parents, because they may lead you to believe the condition is quite worse than it actually is.

1) She is six: Her heart and circulatory system are still at 100% of elasticity. This means that conditions that would cause you or I great damage to our cardiovascular sytem, would create minor unpermanent disturbances to her.

2) She is still growing: The most common answer to the most common pediatric cardiac ailment is that she will grow out of it. If she is showing symptoms of decreased output, her body WILL notice that something needs to be done. It is vastly common that heart murmers decrease or completely disappear as the child grows, because the four valves of the heart are reenforced as the heart gets naturally larger with age.

3) She has a loving family: It is debatable, and there is no solid evidence based statistics on how stress effects healing, but it is widely excepted that an increase in stress worsens immune and other body systems. With a loving family and your support to decrease her stress and reassure her, her recover is just that much more likely.

I am not a doctor by any means. I am infact a graduating nursing student who happens to be digging very very deep into a cardiology section in his schooling. Basically I am trying to reassure you that the numbers are all in your favor. The advances in pediatic cardiology even in the last 2-3 years are amazing. I am a father too and I know how you are worrying right now. I hope I am not missing the mark tying to at least help you to feel at least a little better about your situation.

And as you requested my prayers belong to your family tonight.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your little one along with your family at this difficult time.
Best of luck and God bless you all.

Thank you everyone for the kind words, information, and prayers.

Sorry I did not clarify what was going on. With this flu thing she had, she would start coughing, then fall back unresponsive for a few seconds. The coughing and being unresponsive has continued after the fever/flu and antibiotics were gone.

Doc first thought just coughing too much and not getting O2. Then, after more visits, he started asking my wife about little things we never really payed attention to in the past. Listened to her heart a few more times and decided to send her to a pediatric cardiologist with Childrens.

Doc said it COULD be a restricted valve in the heart. Possibly a valve is not growing as she grows etc. He did say it could just be the virus, but with oddities in the past.....

She has an appointment with Dr. Sperazzo (sp) at his/her office on the 31st. When I originally posted, all I heard was pediatric cardiologist, Childrens, heart. From what has sunken in today, this is a doc with Childrens and she will be seen at his/her office/clinic on NW 13 in Oklahoma City for the gamut of testing, not actually at Childrens hospital as I originally thought.

We were told to expect to be there for several hours depending on initial test findings. I'm really hoping after the first test we're told it was just a false alarm, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

We're going to take my oldest, as we won't be back when she gets home from school. We'll take their halloween costumes in the event time won't allow being home for them to run the neighborhood. I'm guessing we'll hit a mall or two to let them have some fun after a stressful day.

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and kind words. After reading some of the posts, this almost sounds minor to others health issues. I cannot stop dwelling on possible bad news, and don't even want to think about the possibility of surgery. I am already a nervouse wreck and cannot think of anything other than my daughters health.

I really appreciate the support for Haley, "bugs". Please keep "bugs" in your thoughts on the 31st. I'll update as I get information.

Thank you again,
JR

Beautiful child. They're all beautiful to me and I hate it when kids hurt. She (and you) have my prayers too.

Best wishes!
Take some comfort in the 3 or 4 week wait for an appointment. When specialists suddenly make time for you on short notice it is not a good sign.Trust me on this, I once was given an apointment with a cardiologist 10 minutes after a stress test ! Turned out ok (this was 8 years back) but things got real ugly , real fast!
Again , nothing but good thoughts from me for yours!

my prayers are with you! When i was your daughters age, i was going through the same thing it turned out i have an extremely rear blood disorder. i pray your daughter will be fine.

I'm really hoping after the appointment.... I can post on here feeling embarrassed because it was a false alarm. With all the thoughts and prayers I truly hope it happens.

I am a nervous wreck, as you can imagine. Today we went to a friends for a cookout. We spent loads of time running my friends 4 wheeler thru the woods and fields. She shot my buddies barn with about 200 paintballs, and wanted more.

Then after eating (smoked ribs, beef roast, sausage and hot dogs), she wanted more 4 wheeler.... So away we went! It was a good evening and we all had a break from stress. She was doped up, and fighting sleep, but she had a good time.

Keep your fingers crossed that I have a post on Halloween it was a false alarm. I'll give an update with any health turn or doctor appointment.

Thank you everyone.

Prayers sent from San Francisco!
Please be mindful of what the good folks on the forum have said. You don't know yet that there's real trouble, and the fact that they've put the exam off 'till later in the month is a good thing. Enjoy your beautiful child, be sure and have some good times (seems like you've got that one down), let go and let God, as my grandmother used to say. Tomorrow can take care of itself.

Best,
Jeff
