CMP's website has the info, but the nutshell is

-You must be a current member of a CMP-affiliated gun club or state association;
-A U.S. citizen aged 18 or older;
-Satisfy CMP criteria for marksmanship participation within the past five years (this requirement is waived for law-enforcement officers, military personnel, veterans and certain others;
-Not prohibited by federal, state, or local law from purchasing or possessing a rifle.

Once you've got all this squared away, fill out the form (PDF'd on the website), have it notarized, pick out you rifles and give them money. Then wait for UPS, open box(es), clean and shoot!

The marksmanship portion is waived if you are over 60 (which I used) but from everything I can find the 50 shots, some states require, for a carry license is also accepted with a writen statement from the range officer, offical, etc. It's also mentioned in the site Casca posted above.

At first glance it looks like a lot of BS to do but I put the whole thing together in about a half hour.

Good luck.

So, it looks like the shooting requirement is not needed if you have a C&R license, that's new.

Still need membership in something like GCA or a state's Rifle & Pistol Assn.

Still need proof of U.S. citizenship.

One of the CMP papers needs to be notarized, but since you're driving to Camp Perry, they have notaries there.

Regards.

So there is no requirement to have the rifle shipped to an FFL??
Thats the only thing I am unclear on.

m1 Garands

Last year when I was looking to purchase an M1 Garand, I came across the CMP site. I am sure it is a great organization, but I have little interest in competition shooting or meeting special requirements. I can find M1 Garands that I would be proud to own at reasonable prices, at any local gun show. As such, I now have a beautiful Garand made in Feb. 1944, and a brand new one, both Springfields. As I said, nothing wrong with CMP if that's your thing, just don't think that you have to jump through hoops to buy a nice Garand.

Well, the money from CMP goes towards marksmanship training for youngsters, rather than in the dealer's pocket, so I'm all for it. That's why I'm gonna buy from them.

Also, you can go to one of their locations (The south store) and actually hand pick if you want.
