I used to argue with fellas who used staffs rather than canes in the woods. I gave up. I use a slightly longer cane in the woods to use as a "3rd leg" walking across slopes, use it as a hook to grab a sapling or root to clamber up creek banks. You can hang from the a cane by the hook over the top button on your shirt, shirt pocket or over your arm when doing something else. I wish I would picked up a dozen of the White Wax Wood canes Cold Steel used to sell. As it is I only have one. It is my favorite woods cane. The black cane is a United Cutlery synthetic cane. I cut the hook tip off as I might take out my eye with a factory pointed hook tip I am in my 60's so will probably end up with one of these as my EDC sooner rather than later.

Six years ago I broke my femur in two places, shattered, and hip and had a small stroke as a result on top of it. I used a cane for about 6 weeks after getting back up on my feet. It was a cycling accident resulting from being attacked by aggressive dogs of pitbull mix. I sometimes miss the cane, it was handy. But, no, I will not use a cane. I mostly just carried it around when I did have it to let my leg rest when standing still. The muscles had atrophied significantly. I am back to swim, bike, run, lift. J

I will sometimes carry either an aluminum hiking staff or a Kabar aluminum "Self Defence" cane if I'm going to be on my feet for prolonged periods. Mostly to use for resting when there is no place to sit handy. I don't really need them to walk (yet!) but as I enter my sixth decade, I imagine that day is coming.

I keep a couple home made canes available as recently I have had a nagging sciatic nerve issue in my right hip along with bursitus which has made walking painful. However walking and stretching excercises are necessary. The cane does give extra support, especially when I stop to rest.

Dr said 2 falls since March 2018 till now is at 52 2 too many ,I have to walk with a walking stick or cane from now own.
