If I'm going to have to switch back and forth between carrying and not carrying, throughout the day, I'll leave the spare mag in the lockbox in the car and just carry the gun.
If I'm going to be carrying uninterrupted, I'll carry the spare mag with me.
The most I can ever see myself carrying is five - if I were to use my PM9 in an IDPA match. One 7-round mag in the gun and three on my belt, so I would have enough to complete the stage, and a fifth mag in my pocket just for loading the chamber.
