The State Police website for NY lists about 1.1-1.4 million "firearms" being tracked, however there are presumably many folks with multiple handguns,or even huge collections.
I've seen numerous sites report that state police pistol permit bureau number as the number of "licenses" when it clearly states that that is in fact the number of "firearms" (read pistols).

So how many people in NY have pistol permits?

I don't know the answer, but based on the revenue projection for the proposed fee hike, it's about 310,000 licenses.

i don't know but i think its higher than that even--i remember an article a few months back where it gave the number of permits in just the buffalo area and i was surprised how many there were for just that county

But you're forgetting the flip side...for example in NYC there are only 38,000 licenses in over 8 million people. If you extrapolate that to the population of the state you only get 95,000 licenses for 20 million NYS residents.

Gun Control Works!

Onerous permitting processes achieves the intended objective of greatly reducing firearms ownership.

Oh, wait!

You mean gun control is supposed to be about reducing crime? :banghead:

That extrapolation doesn't work for NY because most of NY State is rural, and much more comfortable with guns. Besides, there is a NY State pistol permit and there is a NY City pistol permit. NY City does not recognize the state permit, and visa versa. Additionally, it is about a hundred times easier to get a NY State pistol permit than a NY City pistol permit. So, as you can see, a much smaller percentage of NY City residents have one as compared to the remainder of the state.

New York State permit issued outside NYC is no good in city. NYC permit is good throughout the state of New York. Go figure!

Ummm....yes...I know. That was the point. The rural area's higher per-capital count counters NYC's lower per capital count. What you may not be appreciating is NYC's representation...which is 40% of the state's population. So I'd expect a good bit of counter-ing from the rural community to reach the number of licenses that are believed to be out there.
