Well, I recently bought a SA XD-9 because of certain factors. I was undecided between the Glock 19 and the XD-9. It seems like you get actually more for your money in an XD than in a Glock. I have not shot it yet but the fact that it has steel sights was a small factor in me choosing it over the Glock.
When I look at the Glock, I see certain aspects of the gun that were made to save money and not to improve function. The plastic sights are one of the things they didn't bother to spend any thought or money on. It becomes almost manditory that you have to replace those things. I like fixed sight on a self defense pistol and I don't see why I should have to spend an extra $30-90 for a set of fixed steel combat sights just to replace something that should have been made of steel in the first place.
It is not just about sights, the slide release lever is made out of stamped sheet metal! How cheap can you get? When you take a Glock apart, there is nothing in there that says to me that it is worth what they ask for them. They are not junk, they work but they just didn't add a penny worth of cost if they could get away with it.
SIGs ARE made with better materials. Aluminum and steel is better than plastic in my book. They are more expensive at least and that was my point. SIGs are made with expensive materials like aluminum and steel and coiled wire recoil springs and glocks are made of steel, plastic and sheet metal stampings.
I am not just bashing Glock here, I almost bought one and I may still buy one if I get a good deal on a G-19 but I still don't think they are worth the prices being asked. Glock 19s run about $550 for a standard one near me. I can get a SIG for $650! I don't like SIGs otherwise I would own one of each model since I think they are one of the best production guns on the market. Unfortunatly they don't fit me as well as some other guns but I envy the people the feel SIGs are a perfect fit for them. On paper, SIGs are everything I like but the high bore axis and the long trigger reach in DA and a few other things make them less than ideal for me. The SA XD seems to out-Glock Glock. I may be jumping the gun since I have never even fired an XD but the ergos are great, Glock ergos are a joke. The only good thing about the Glock ergos is the grip angle. Most peole hate the grip angle but I like it, I wish all guns had more angle like the Glock.
One other reason I chose not to buy a Glock, I didn't want to join the ranks of these "Glock Heads" that take offense if you question a design point or state that there could be a possible flaw in the great pistol's design. They are like religious zealots, it is heresy to question anything. Well, I'm an American and we like to question things. We like to shake things up a bit. We also don't like people trying to stop us from being free to ask what we want to ask. In a way, Glock fanatics are a little scary. I didn't know if I was ready to join the Glock Cult yet.
