how much is a box of shotgun shells?

i was thinking about a super nova but how much does shotgun ammo go for? i know what i'm paying for 9mm's. just ordered my .22 firestorm to cut back the costs.

I would say that 12ga runs about $5 per box of 25 and up for field ammo. Sometimes you can find it on sale for less. Federal bulk pack is about $22 per 100 at walmart. Buckshot, slugs, and hevishot are considerably more expensive.

Good reply. These Walmart loads will serve you well. I'd stay away from the Winchesters due to what I have read on this site. They have given me no trouble. They will serve 95% of your shooting needs.

I'd recommend you buy a carton of 7.5s and a carton of 6s. I paid $21.99+tax for these at Walmart. Unless you are into turkey, deer, or waterfowl, these are all you will need. Use the 7.5s for quail and most upland birds. Use the 6s for pheasants and squirrels and other small game.

I've paid a lot more for the higher rated loads but I am satisfied with the promo Remington and Federal loads from Walmart.

Should you decide to turkey hunt, you need specialized loads such as heavy 4s and 5s. For deer hunting, Brenneke slugs or buckshot.

They generally come in boxes of 25 shells, which are around $5, and "promo packs" of 100 (four boxes) which are around $22.

Stay away from the Winchester stuff; it seems to have a knack for binding up shotguns. Nothing a couple of whacks on the ground with the buttstock shouldn't fix, but with Remington Sport Loads something like a dollar more, why bother?

Also remember that while shotgun ammo is comparatively high in price, you're not going to be rapid-dumping 15 to 30 rounds at a time, either, as you might with handguns or EBRs. Makes it last a bit longer.

It is worth comparing the price of the individual box of 25 rds with the price of the 100 round "value pak." On occasion at Walmart it has been cheaper to buy 4 separate boxes. Even when it is the same exact stuff.

Slugs are something like $8 or $9 for a box of 15 at Wal-Mart, and buckshot should be similar. Hevi-shot and other tungsten stuff is like $40 per box of 25. Or at least, that was the price last year. I probably don't want to know how much it is now.

My Nova digests anything I can put in the tube. I use Winchester Super X 00 Buck (3 inch), Winchester Supreme #4 Turkey (3.5 inch), Federal Game-Shok Slugs, Winchester AA Target, Remington STS Target. Just my experiences with a Benelli Nova, YMMV.

The only issue with feeding/ejection my Nova ever had was allowing a new shotgunner to short-stroke the action with a live cartridge in the chamber. But that will foul up just about any pump action.
