Here's a link to a video that was produced with Homeland Security funds that gives tips that may enhance survival from an active shooter, according to this article .........

http://www.federalnewsradio.com/?nid=31&sid=2966001

I think the video should have included a law abiding CCW holder attempting to stop the active shooter, right?

It's lawsuit prevention. They don't want to tell you to shoot someone else.

Weird... am I the only one who noticed that at 1:00 min the video shows that this building is signed as a no gun zone. I thought these signs stopped active shooters?

What I found shocking is that the DHS actually encouraged people to fight back!

As a last resort, working together or alone, act with aggression, use improvised weapons and fight.

Maybe they mean to "improvise" a weapon out of your [fill in the blank CCW]?

What ever happened to "don't resist, just do whatever the bad guy says, and it will all turn out for the best"? Oh, wait, maybe that ended with Flight 93....

That was entertaining. "The authorities are working hard...".

Why didn't they title it "Escape, resist, evade"? And why did they make the bad guy look like me? How did events in the conference room turn out? What would Jack Bauer do?

That little video left me with way more questions than it answered.

Yeah, that's almost as good as the dhss training people to sneeze into their arms to fight the bird flu or whatever it was. Totally useless.

At first I was doubtful but if this gets just a few to think about the possibility then the video was not a bad idea.

The majority of citizens would just be like a deer in the headlights. Maybe this will wake up a few.

Even with all the training, 13 died in the Ft. Hood incident.

Ummm...that is actually a fairly effective hygiene measure to help curtail the spread of germs.

Anyway, I thought the video was fairly reasonable and worthwhile.

3 things came immediately to mind

1.The place I work has those gunbusters signs also.

2.What good was that poor security guard, he didn't even have a gun. and the security people where I work (ONE on each shift) are unarmed, and either very old men, or a chubby short woman.

3. What did that place do to upset Vin Diesel?

No government worker is going to say shoot someone. Remember the girl with the shotgun? she asked the 911 operator if she should shoot. The 911 operator says I can't tell you to do that. You do what you have to do to protect your baby.

+1, gun free zones is the common denominator of all of these tragedies. Interestingly, some of the commentary even from NBC and other "liberal" news organizations brought up the issue of whether an armed member of the audience could have intervened.

Maybe more folks are beginning to understand that simple fact, but we are still surrounded by an anti-gun climate especially after incidents like this. It will remain a vigilant battle just to keep the 2A in its current form, let alone bring it back to the original intent.

I think that was the same narrator we heard in grade school in the 1950s...

"Remember children, when you see the flash from a nuclear explosion, Duck under your desk and Cover your head."

It's pretty much the best the DHS can do given today's current political climate. Remember, two decades ago, states that permitted lawful carry of a firearm were far fewer, and advice given back then to people potentially facing armed attack was a lot more pacifist, virtually never encouraging fighting back.

It is refreshing to see times changing, even if the pace is slow.

But, I believe the video could be a little more blunt on what to do when those fleeing (or trapped by) a mass-shooter encounter law enforcement officers. The advice should include not to run toward or at the officer(s), yell at or to them, or try to grab onto them for safety. Simply note and follow their directions, and speak only if asked questions or told to speak, or if you have immediately-pertinent critical information ("there are two more people in that room you're about to enter" or "the shooter is behind that door!")

Yeah, despite the irony I found in the video, I didn't think the message was too bad:

1) Escape
2) Evade
3) Fight

Most people (and we must know that this almost certainly means better than 90%) are not armed with weapons at work. For those people, running is a good option. If these people can't run, hiding is a good option. And, if they can't hide, fighting with anything and everything they've got is a good idea.

This video wasn't written for people who hang around on gun forums discussing this stuff. Many of us are among the small percentage of folks who may be armed at work, and we're also among the crowd who have already considered these issues. A lot of people have never thought about the possibility that this could happen to them, and it can't hurt to remind them that it could.

Nevertheless, I also thought about the similarity to the "Duck and Cover" stuff :)

Did we not watch the same video? It explicitly stated that as a last resort you fight. What do you think the CCW does? It allows to to have a tool used in fighting. Fight is the action, and the state of mind. A gun is just a tool.

I don't think the video needed to say that explicitly.

If you thought that was fairly effective you're kidding yourself.

But if this kind of stuff makes you feel better, then so be it.

I think it was. I think that the vast majority of the American public hasn't even thought about how they would react in such a situation. If some of them happen to watch this video, envision their work place, local mall, theater, etc... and begin to think about how they would stay alive in such a situation, then I'd say the video was "fairly effective."

it would be funny if it was a parody of idiot government "public service announcements" to the cattle

hurf a derf, the authorities are working hard to protect you

I guess the sign on the door prevented guns there, too.

Let's keep the signs and watch the video. Homeland security, indeed.

To me, a DEAD active shooter is a safe active shooter, at least from the perspective of everyone else there.

And nothing stops an active shooter better than a good dose of lead applied at about 1000 fps, "Homeland Security" be danged.

HS is only interested in THEIR security, not yours.

Fox News just did a story on this video.

In their story, they mentioned that requests for this video are coming in from across the nation and even globally.

Notice in these videos, that the fight, so to speak, usually takes place in close quarters. You can jump the shooter.

They avoid the scenario of a theatre or lecture hall where getting to the shooter would be very difficult and the best response is a trained gun carrier.

Yes, in the close situations the shooter has been jumped. Doors have been barricaded. However, doors have been shot through and pushed open, killing those inside. Some folks who rushed have been shot dead.

They don't want to promote guns. They don't want to tell folks to get guns and then go train with them - that promotes the RKBA. I note some forum residents get mad if we suggest that you should train to be efficacious.

Thus, flee and hide - quite legit. Fight - yep, but avoidance of the best way to fight in this situation.
