I took a buddy of mine out shooting yesterday. It was his first time out, but he borrowed his little brother's shotgun. The gun in question was a brand spankin-new Remington 870 magnum, youth model 20 guage. My friend is 6'2". The gun's way too small for him, and his brother is the same height, so it's too small for him too. It was a gift to the brother when he was pretty young, but it's never been fired more that a couple of times, and he's outgrown it.

Is there any way to size up the gun, make it more shootable for the big guys? can you put a Knoxx stock or something on it to make it long enough to be comfortable? I made his brother an offer for the gun, it's too small for me too, but great for my girlfriend or sister or something. We'll see if he takes it, since he doesn't seem to have much interest in the gun.

All it will take is replacing the 'issue' youth stock with an adult sized stock for the same gauge receiver. You can likely find one on eBay or a similar site, or buy one from Remington if necessary.

But the best bet is finding a smaller statured shooter who needs a youth shotgun. There are LOTS of good inexpensive used pumpguns out there, but not a lot of them are youth guns... a grownup might well be better off with a 12 gauge anyway, given the much wider choices in ammunition.

eta: I'm 6'3" with a 37" sleeve and commonly shoot 12 ga. 870s with 12.5" LOP's. The youth stock you're talking about is a 13" LOP IIRC. It's easier to shoot a too-short stock than a too-long one, biggest trick to it is keeping your thumb over on the knuckle of your trigger finger so you don't bust your schnozz under recoil.

Lee Lapin I'd listen to...

'cause...

I have concluded there is much truth in the saying:
I didn't grow up-just got bigger.

52 y/o Southern Boy here, 6' 170 pounds and 33-34" sleeve and do not ask me the last time I shot an "Adult" shotgun. *grin*

I gotta Youth H&R 20 ga single shot I keep handy...not actually shot mine for a bit, but do shoot quite a few just like it. [My fault of course these folks have one like it]

If I am not shooting a single shot Youth Shotgun of some kind, I am shooting a "kids" sized repeater.

Or .22 single shot, or .22 repeater...
I even use the Kids sized homemade sling shots and BB guns...

Hell I have a hankering to go to Chuckie Cheese and play the kids games...

I'd listen to Lee, as I am having too much fun going backwards on all this stuff.

*grin*

Sounds good. If my buddy's brother takes me up on my offer and I buy it from him, I plan to leave it as-is so that my girlfriend can use it, as well as others. (my girlfriend is maybe 5'3")

I'm just inquiring at the behest of my buddy, and because it made me curious. Thanks for the help!
