HST should be an easy replacement for Hydra-Shock

I recieved my Federal HST this week. Both 45acp and 9mm. The 45 has the exact same cartridge case and bullet profile as Hydra-Shock. So, it stands to reason that any gun that feeds Hydra-Shock reliably should feed HST just the same. I have yet to shoot it, so I don't know if the POI will be the same. If it is, if will be an easy transition for sure.

HST has proved to be some of the best performing ammunition I have tested in five years.

Over the chrono, on target, and looking at recovered bullets shot thru denim into water.

Low ES/SD, accurate, and expansion plus penetration was exemplary thru several different barrel lengths.

hydrashocks

i se a lot of threads that call hy shocks outdated, old technology, etc but i think a lot of people are throwing aside a very good rd, i to have hst in my guns but i would not feel undergunned with hy-shoks imho.:banghead:

I think hydro-shocks WERE a great round, however in all the tests I have seen HST has deeper penetration and larger expansion. HST also seem to have more reliable expansion through heavy clothing.

Today I can get HST for LESS than a box of hydros
230gr .45ACP Hydroshock (P45HS1G) = $27
230gr .45ACP HST (P45HST2) = $24

So the round that has better ballistics is cheaper. Seems like a no brainer to me.
I can only see two logical reasons for continuing to use hydros over HST
1) For some reasons hydros feel MORE reliably than HST. Reliability should be #1 factor and trump any small change in penetration.
2) I always test a new ammo for function and relability with 300-500 rounds. 500 rounds is going to cost ~$200. So if you don't have the money to do a complete test (but you have already done a 300-500 round test w/ Hydros) it might make sense to continue to pickup a box or two of hydros until you get a chance.

For someone today buying a case (10 boxes) I see no reason to pickup Hydro over HST. At best they are equal and the Hydro is more expensive. At worst the Hydro is inferior AND more expensive.

They Hydra Shoks were fine....20 years ago. There is a whole new generation of JHP bullets that are worlds better than the Hydra Shok.

i was not disputting one being better than the other but the way shooters are talking they should quit making hy shoks. i don't think so:uhoh:

Rugerman45 Says:
the hst has a bigger opening than the hydra and might cause them to hang but the feed fine thrugh my p90 and my hi-point carbine
That is true of the internal dimensions of the hollow point, but the external dimensions are an identicle .300". So, feed and function should be the same.

I burned up a box of HST and a box of SXT at the range today. I put them through a P345 and a PX4 45acp. They both fed flawlessly in both guns and had equal accuracy.

The p345 seemed to have the ever so slightest accuracy preference for the HST and the PX4 seemed to have a very slight accuracy preference for the SXT. However, my test was a pretty small sample and was far from controlled scientific conditions.

Both rounds were noticeably hotter than the Winchester white box. The HST seemed slightly hotter than the SXT on recoil. To my surprise, both guns were notably more accurate with the WWB. I can only speculate that the lower recoil helped the WWB observed accuracy.

Nailed it. I love HST, and for me, it has been flawless in a USP 40, Glock 27, CZ 75D PCR, FNP9-m, CZ 97B, I think thats it. My 40B has been having some minor teething issues but I can't remember if it was HST or the other .40 ammo I had when it was choking.

I don't believe in a magic bullet or caliber. Just try to do the
best with what is available to me.

Some would day the the Silvertip is outdated too, but
a 10mm STHP would ruin anyone's day!

I prefer Gold Dots nowdays. Mostly because that is what I
can find around here. I've never seen any HST and only
a few boxes of RANGER and Cor-Bons. A definitive NO
on DPX!
