I just began the PA hunter safety course last night. I've always been really into military surplus rifles but never went deer hunting before. I have family and friends who have offered to take me, but I just never got around to taking the course.

To keep this gun related, I wanted to say they really stress firearms safety and the course is a real pleasure (and education) for anyone who is into firearms and might consider hunting down the road.

The instructor (great guy, Vietnam vet) even took time to explain how bad/sloppy hunters give all hunters a bad name, and anti-hunters are usually anti-gun and vice versa, so it is very important for all of us, both firearm owners and hunters, to be good ambassadors to the regular public.

In conclusion- if you were ever considering doing a free hunter safety course, go for it, you can learn a lot and it should be a positive experience. :)

Free? In MI, it cost me $5. Dang.

Anyway, it was an informative class. It was not much on firearms, more on safety, signalling, survival.

It's required in MI if you're under a certain age. I was "grandfathered" out of it, but was curious, so I forked over the fiver.

Just took it again last year myself with my daughter (she was 12)....very good course, and yes PA is free...we even got lunch.

Very happy with the class, 75% was youngsters and the Game Commision guy there (Schuykill County area) was great with the kids, getting them involved and keeping thier attention. I learned a lot myself.

I have a Ruger 77, but I currently hunt with a K98...I reload and have aftermarket peep sights (mojo) put on the rifle.

Best friend has been hunting with a .303 Enfield for years.
