so im confused about the whole hunting thing. i know there are certain seasons for certain animals, but i also know you can hunt feral hogs all year... so for the animals you can hunt year round where can i legally carry a rifle and hunt? is it just anywhere outside of city limits? I know i will need a hunting license but after i obtain one of those, is it just a matter of going somewhere outside city limits and only shooting things that are in season?? thanks.

You might want to find out who owns the land you plan on using and seek thier permission.

Consult an experienced hunter in your area.

Wasn't meant to be a smart remark...just saying. I live in the country and hunt on land that is owned by myself, family, friends, or friends of friends. So it's not really an issue. Basicly, once you have a place to hunt and a licence, yes it's that simple, so long as what you are hunting is in season or has no season. If you live in or know people who live in rural ares, ask around and find out who has a hog problem and would like to have it solved. That's what I do....

Texas is mostly private land, thats why BMF stated that. Whereas a lot of states have tons of public hunting.

Lets remember to take THR in our remarks.

NUMBER ONE...when you buy your license, get an Annual Public Hunting permit (APH) for 48 bucks. In a few weeks, you'll receive a pamphlet in the mail with maps and info on legal hunting areas managed by TPW and the rules you must follow to hunt them, legal game, etc. Also, there's a lot of national forest in east Texas that's legal to hunt. However, I don't like going there in deer season, even with the required orange on. Might bump in to a color blind idiot, ya know.

I hunt mostly my own land, but have a WMA in my area I use a lot. You need to know WHAT you're going to hunt. I can tell ya this, if you're new to hunting, there's lots of EXCELLENT public hunting in east Texas for squirrel. I love to squirrel hunt, but live a ways from the piney woods. I get up there now and then when I can, but not often enough.

Most gunshops and most Ace or TruValue hardware stores have the Texas Parks & Wildlife Commission rule book for hunting and fishing. There will be info in there about lands which are open to hunting, separate from the usual private-land system.

As far as a place to hunt, most Texas deer and game-bird hunting is via leases on ranches. Hog hunting will vary; some farms/ranches charge for access; some don't.

Small town feed'n'seed stores can sometimes be sources of information about availaable hunting land.

Depending on your age; unless your an old fart like me you will need to take a hunter safety course before hunting in Texas.

But as stated be prepared to spend spme money most private land is not cheap. I am thinking of getting a lease next year and do not like the idea of spending all of the money
