hypothetical: AK-74, no more surplus ammo, what do you do?

A prime example for having several rifles in different calibers. In my case, I have a AK74 in 545x39, a MAS49/56 in 308. and a M1D in 3006. I have LOTS of ammo for all three. At my age, I doubt if I will ever shoot all of it up. If you are worried about running out of a particular caliber, BUY MORE IF IT. All it takes is money.....Oh, if you would quit bump firing, you would have more ammo.....chris3

It already exists, domestically -- and that's WHILE there is plenty of surplus ammo around that's the cheapest centerfire ammo available. (So, the toughest to compete against.)

If the surplus ammo was to magically dry up, the manufacturers would step up making it just like they would any other very popular cartridge.

(Yes, most ammo has been hard to find THIS YEAR. That comes and goes. Don't worry too much about temporary shortages.)

When there are 8 bazillion 5.54x39 rifles in this country, one of the most popular styles of firearm right now, the manufacturers would be suicidal not to make it by the warehouse-load should their foreign competition be artificially cut off.

Hornady 5.45x39 is made with imported primed steel cases, they just load the bullet and powder.

I'd buy wolf or WPA for cheap stuff and I'd buy hornady varmint express if I want reloadable brass and varminting ammo for the interim.

I don't see why you guys hate wolf ammo! My AK loves it. It will eat them and spit them out all day long without a problem. It's cheap, non corrosive and from my experience accurate for a battle rifle. And I am not sure who said it was only shooting at 1050 fps! I chronographed mine at 2637 fps or thereabouts. So, that is way off. 1050 fps is not much bette than a .45 ACP round out of a handgun.

Nothing wrong with Wolf or Tula. I keep Hornady SST's in the mags, but once those are out, it's all Wolf, Tula, or Golden Tiger FMJ's. FMJ isn't ideal, but heck, it works well enough.
