Last night it was around 2:30, I was up getting a glass of water, I heard a car door slam. I live by an intersection out in the country down one road its a drunks paradise . Well I went back to my Bedroom and grabbed my Sig p220 and told the wife to grab her .357 229 if she heard shots . I heard a knock on my front door grabbing another mag , I answered the door. "Get the ---- out of my way , I'm going to kill her" was the first thing the guy said. I found out his ex-girl friend used to live at our house. We just bought the place I calmly explained. He then went to his jeep and put his hand under his seat . I then revealed my 220 and danced the laser grips on his door needless to say the police were called and they picked him up for harassement dui and illegaly concealling a firearm, that he was to drunk to pull out on me. I'm lucky he didn't draw, I would hate to lose that gun to an evidence room.

Glad to hear everything turned out alright! Bet it shook you up a bit.

And of course that you didn't have to spend a big chunk of next years salary on lawyers defending a good shoot.

Glad they picked up the SOB sounds like he's a perfect candidate to be singing jail house rock.

While I am glad that all turned out well, I hope you will take a moment to consider the entire sequence to see what should be learned. I would direct your attention to the tactical wisdom of answering the door at 2:30am to a stranger as worthy of further consideration. Leaving the house to the vicinity of his vehicle would be another area for future learning. A third consideration might be when in the sequence you relate did the police get called? Early is always better than later.

You did well, but next time you might not want to answer the door at 2:30AM.

Also feel lucky that the drunk didn't think to have you charged with brandishing a firearm.

Yeah ,,, next time let him kick in the door so you'll have to shoot him.

Really I think you did good. No shots fired, bad guy in jail, what better outcome...

displaying the arm in that manner was entirely legal. What's next? Shoot a home intruder and while because it is self defense you need not worry about murder charges, but they stick you with 'discharging a firearm in city limits'

no

Perfectly handled, Ruger_dude. (Except for "answering the door," if that entailed actually opening it.)

Another great reason for laser grips. They give the perpetrator information by which they may direct the course of what is about to happen. Without that laser, he might not have realized that the OP had a firearm.

Sorry, If my door was knocked on at 2:30 in the morning I am going to answer. Armed of course. I would want to know what the deal is. I'm not gonna sit there and let someone knock on the door and then with no answer let him/her go perusing around the house to another location where i don't know where the person is. That I would say is not very tactically smart. I want to know where the person is and be in control of the situation!

Good Job

I say it was well handled. We can always be paranoid, what if it was someone that really needed help? Answering the door armed with precaution was the right thing to do.

I agree with most of you guys saying that if my door bell is ringed at 230am. I am going to the front armed. No way in hell am i opening the door un armed. Same time I would not be the only one pointing a gun outside. or towards the front door.

i'm generally a myob guy but give some consideration to contacting his ex and letting her know he came hunying her. she may have some legal action already pending it could affect or at the least she can raise her level of awareness. glad you didn't have to shoot him. kinda sad he didn't take himself outt hitting a tree leaving your place

This actually may be one of the best arguments in favor of lasersights I have heard in a long time. Depending on how well lit your door is, he may not have been able to tell if you were holding a gun or a phone.

Also I would like to add a note that in this case, your gun saved his ex' GF's life without firing a shot. The Brady bunch can put that in their pipe and smoke it.

...I'm not gonna sit there and let someone knock on the door and then with no answer...

Answering the door is not the same thing as opening the door.

From your side of the closed door you could demand whatever information you would require before you would even consider opening the door (if at all).

For example: A little old lady's scared voice telling you her car broke down. Maybe you open it. Preferrably you have some way of seeing what they look like and whether anyone else is out there.

In the other extreme, if you ask who is there and what do they want and the answer is "Let me the f**k in - I'll kill her!" - then you probably DON'T want open the door.

...give some consideration to contacting his ex and letting her know he came hunting her...

That is an excellent suggestion, Perhaps you could inquire whether the police have already done so.

They said that they would take care of it. The part about brandishing,3 months ago I would have answered with my Stag until I read something by some guy called Massad Ayoob. But thanks I still think I did something wrong not grabbing a shotty and scaring him of right away.

I'm lucky he didn't draw, I would hate to lose that gun to an evidence room.

Precisely why I own two of the same gun, and why I don't own a hi-ticket 1911 for defense.

I'd probably answer from my bedroom window, which overlooks the front of my house, with "who the &*$%^ are you and what the !@#$% are you doing knocking on my door [sound of 870 being racked]?!!" Cell phone in one hand and 870 in the other.

Sounds like you did everthing fine to me. I, also, would encourage a response from somebody knocking at my door at O Dark Thirty. If you do not communicate your displeasure to them, they may just try to enter.

Those who have not been a similar situation do not realize the sudden anxiety that hits you, and the uncomfortable feel of your testicles trying to climb into your throat!

I have had armed BG's in my back yard. You did well.
