I knocked out the primer, drilled out the hole, and attached a screw eye through the base, then just pressed a Sierra 69gr BTHP in it.
I like it.

What do you think, shall I make more...perhaps ebay niche?

Seems to be a regional thing. Buddy of mine made up a bunch of keychains like that in various calibers, sold the snot out of them at local gunshows. When the urge dried up, I got the bright idea of using a .32 case and hollowing out a bullet, putting an ear ring hook through the flash hole, and he sold snot out of those to the gang bangers who wandered in trying to find some way to defeat the dealer's cable locks to steal a pistol (or six).

When I was in the ARMY back in the early 70's we did something similar with both .45ACP FMJ and 5.56mm bullets.

Get a bullet, a bobby pin and a dog tag chain.

Clip off the open end of the bobby pin leaving about 3/4" of the closed end.

With a cigarette lighter heat up the bullet (pointed down so the lead doesn't run out) 'till the lead melts. It doesn't take long (especially with the 5.56mm). Insert the clipped off bobby pin - open end first - into the melted lead. Let it cool. Run the dog tag chain thru the bobby pin loop and voila - a really cool bullet on a chain necklace (well - it was cool to us anyway).

Most guys went for the 5.56mm as it was lighter and more comfortable to wear than the .45ACP.

I imagine with a gold chain instead of dog tag chain and a bit fancier connection to the bullet that something like that might sell at a gun show.

Werewolf, I hope you guys took the poweder out first before taking a lighter to a .45 or a 5.56 round:what:

I'm pretty sure he's talking about a pulled bullet. They would hold the bullet point-down so they could get at the exposed lead at the heel/base of the bullet. The copper jacket with it's much higher melting point would hold the heated lead like a little crucible cup. Then they'd stick the bobby pin pice in and let the lead cool, cementing it in place.

It was a pendant comprised of just the bullet. No cartidge case at all. (This must have been the old M855 ball, the steel core of the SS109 would get in the way…)

Not being one my self, but knowing plenty of people who were in the military, I'm sure they found other "interesting" uses for the powder, case, and primer… :)

Cool

I don't know what happened with my original pic, perhaps it was corrupt last night streaming from my dial up connection...anyway, anybody want one?

i personally wouldn't pass up the opportunity to buy a couple of those for my friends if i saw it as an impulse buy at a gun show. I think ebaying it would be a really great idea, just make sure to write a few hundred times that you are not selling live ammunition. I recall a thread before where a persons auction was closed for that very reason, even though they stated several times over that they were only dummy training bullets and contained no powder.

on a more practical note, how long did it take? I'm sure that will probably be the biggest thing that would influence your pricing.

Even though it's a dud, don't try to carry that onto a plane. It'll be seized at the security check point.

hmmm...

I've come up with a method in my head for making these probably 5 or 6 at a time and it probably would take little more than a half hour... perhaps I DO hear ebay calling my name.

Does anyone have an patent experience? Being that there are already so many items EXACTLY like this out there and my "design" is not exactly finely unique, would I be in danger of being sued for patent infringement?

hmmm....(tapping my chin)

well somuch for that!

I just vistited ebay and found that not only was my idea not uncommon, but there is no niche to fill....plenty of people are already doing this.
Oh well, I have mine, and it was free! HAH.
