Hey y'all,

I just ran across and decided to try a Swampfox Freedom 30mm scope mount. The specs looked good. 7075 T6, 5.6 ounces in weight and looked pretty cool.

Anyway, it turns out that there is some sort of friction tape inside the rings. I haven't seen this in 20 years, from back when machining tolerances weren't what they are today.

Do you guys think that I should read anything into this? Would you consider this an indication of quality, or lack thereof? My knee jerk reaction is to believe that they are using the tape to make up for something.

This mount?

I don't see the tape, if they mention it I missed it. At that price it should be a decent mount. I have never heard of them before. It has a nice look.

From what I have read, the swampfox optics are pretty good. I would assume the mounts are too. I wouldn't read too much into the tape. heck, it might protect your scope from the dreaded Ring Mark

Walkalong, that's it. Zoom in on it. You can see the edges of the tape on the inside of the rings.

I'm going to do a bit more research. Most reviews I've found were by retailers talking up the brand. The two I've found by neutral 3rd parties that seem to know what they're talking about say stay away.

I was hoping someone here had some hands on experience.

I emailed them and asked them what it was for.

I've got to admit ... curiosity got the better of me. I started checking it out, to see if everything was square. I'm gonna see what their response is.

OK, nevermind. I started really looking at it. I went to tighten it to the rail of a rifle and noticed that the screws were turning in like they were bent or something. I pulled the screws to see what was up and there were two washers and a lock washer on each screw. Apparently, the washers were there to keep the bolt centered in the screw hole of the mounting plate.

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't order a scope from them. Based on youtube reviews, they are pretty nice. So much for youtube.
