i am out of work, and down to my last two guns. i have a mini-14 and do you guys think it would be safe to sell it, or try to hold on and keep it just in case things go down hill.

At this stage, I am trying to keep every gun that I own. If circumstances dictate a sale, then it has to be, gotta eat. Gotta keep the lights and heat on too.

The probability that one is going to need to eat and pay bills is awfully close to 1. The probability one is going to need a gun to defend oneself is a lot closer to 0.

waymor, I'm sorry to hear about your situation, and my family will pray that you perservere, and continue to try. I know that this economy is scary, and it could happen to any of us at any time. The nice things we own get sold to pay for food for our children in a heartbeat.

You asked for advise, and that is rare here:), so I'll give it:

Will it really make a difference? If yes, sell it. If your just delaying the inevitable, keep it. If your out of the house, your out of the house. 2 more weeks won't help.

I hope you have family. I know in my case hell may be nicer than going back home to Ma (she's a special lady really:)), but it's there. She's no safer though, and if we had to we'd open our home in a heartbeat also.

I sold all my guns in the past, I would not do it again....Only if there was NO other choice and it would truly make a difference.

Me, personally, I'd be homeless with a gun safe stuffed in the back seat of my car...

To expand on what "Yo Mama" said, you could possibly get $500-ish from selling that rifle, is that going to keep you alive until you have another job? Probably not. But Maybe... If you have a job lined up, and only need to make it a week or two, and that $500 is the difference between eating or starving, then Sell it, Pawn it, etc, and buy another one later.

It may come down to needing that gun to put food on the table, just food for thought.

I spent a good number of years with one gun. A Mossberg Model 500 in 20ga. with a 19 inch barrel. I purchased this for $80 at the time , and just this fall replaced it with another that cost me $125 . ( I had sold the old girl a couple years back)
I never felt underguned .

Sell the Mini if you have to, and use some of the money to buy a cheap gun for basic use if the other one is not enough. Life goes on and with it some hard times can happen to most any of us. Good Luck , and remember it is just stuff .

Mnrivrat makes a good point.. You can always sell the Mini-14 and buy something much cheaper... There are plenty of shotguns to be had used in the 50-150 range, and then you'd still have $350-450 left over if you got a good deal for your rifle.

There's always Hi Point also.. You can pick those up BRAND NEW for less than $150, the pistols, and the carbine (I'd go with the carbine, a better replacement for the Mini 14)

"...in case things go down hill..." How much farther do you think things will go for you?
Any Temp Agencies in town? Low pay and thankless work(usually manual labour), but it does bring in some money.

I've gone there in the past, and been rid of some of my favorite pieces through hard times.

Now I can't. It's against my religion to sell a gun.

I am very sorry about your situation. Most of us are a paycheck or two away from being in your shoes.
Do you need the money right now in order to feed yourself and your family or to keep the heat on? Sell it if the answer is yes. People have been preparing for SHTF for decades and most have not needed the guns. If you need money for food, power or medical bills then you have immediate needs and you will have to worry about guns for SHTF later.
I wish you luck.

Anyone have experience with Kel Tec RFB Carbine?

Does anyone have any experience with the Kel Tec RFB Carbine? I saw a story on it and it looked kind of interesting (at least if they shaved several hundred dollars off of it). It's priced up there with a M1A or DSA FAL so I think they want a bit too much for it but it seems like an interesting concept if the reliability and accuracy are there.

thanks guys. my other gun is a taurus 709. you all came up with some good points. what i mint about down hill was the country. i think i will hold it for awhile and if i have to, down size to something cheaper like a hi-point carbine. all the input helped alot.

BTDT - I'd go with McDonalds and keeping the last 2 guns. I never got down to only 2, but I got the point where I knew when I was going to stop selling. The last one went out in trade on a truck so I could start my own business, and I've done fairly well ever since. Collection starting to grow again, remarried, and even own my own home again. So, it can turn around in a heartbeat. You just have to have faith in yourself and God.

my dad told me, "no matter what, never sell your tools, or your guns". well, like an idiot, i did not listen to him, and when times got tough, i sold a few of my guns, and tools. some of it, i do not miss, but some of it i really do. and some of it, i will never own again. basicly, look at it this way. if it is something that you will regret for the rest of your life, DO NOT SELL IT! if it is just a toy, that you could replace later, that is a differnt story.

I once had to sell a few of my guns to raise cash to help a family member. To this day, I think about what I could have done differently, because I regret losing one of the guns in particular. Unlike your situation, I wasn't the one in need, so can't exactly relate, but do all you can to at least retain one weapon for self defense.

I feel your pain...

Every day I sigh about the guns I've had to sell (at a loss too, dangit!) to make it through the lean times. Then I think about the guns I've bought during the fatter times and I smile. I'd say exhaust all other forms of moneymaking before you sell, but if it comes to that, then fear naught and sell it. It's easy to say "I'd NEVER sell this gun." with a full belly and a roof over my head, but when it comes down to paying the bills or keeping a dust collector... well, you get the point.

Besides, it's not like it's Grampa's Colt 1911 that he carried all over Europe, right? There's more Ruger's being made everyday:D

things are going "down hill" and where you live might determine if you really need your guns and when.

Dang - This is a tough post to read on the 1st of the year. Sorry about your situation.

You can probably get between $400 - $500 for it. Probably closer to $400 during this time of year. Also depends on how many mags and which model it is. A new tactical model is going for ~ $600 to $700.

Don't sell any of them (Mini-14 or Taurus 709) if you can.

If you have to sell one - sell the Taurus 709 and get a Hi-Point 9mm pistol. The Taurus will garner a better resale price. Lot's of folks these days looking for a slim carry piece. That way, you'll have a couple of hundred in your pocket and have a handgun for defense.

I know the helpless feeling when unemployed. From my perspective, selling a couple guns and making maybe $1000 tops would have little impact other than to buy groceries or pay the electric bill.

What state are you in anyway?
