I cannot emphasize enough the importance to you right now to get a good instructor. You won't need but a good lesson or two.

I've found it incredibly easy to teach bad shooters to be good ones in a pretty fast amount of time, and there are certainly fine teachers in your area, where ever you are!

I know an incredible rifleman. His field technique and skill is awesome . . . but he too is a terrible handgunner. You can get away with a lot of sins with your strong hand and trigger, with a rifle of shotgun pasted against your shoulder and cheek. Not so with a handgun.

Don't keep trying to perfect improper technique . . . you'll only turn into a mediocre shot and tons of wrong muscle memory then programmed in.

Good luck too!

PS: I'd STRONGLY recommend shooting a lot of .22LR ammo in some sort of handgun right now, while you perfect your mechanics. Not only is it much cheaper, the recoil, blast, etc. is a non-issue and it will help you overcome your fear that's causing you to flinch.

Relax and make sure your eyes (or at LEAST your dominant eye is open to see each and every muzzle flash you shoot with a handgun (rifle too)! When this starts happening, you are finally overcoming the flinch. With a decent centerfire handgun, you should easily be able to shoot at least a 2" group at ten yards with a handgun once you do.

Later on, you'll be shooting ragged, one-hole groups at ten yards with the larger calibers! Just get some training NOW!
