Im interested in getting better prepared for a dangerous encounter and I want to be better at defensive handgun shooting , im active duty and not an officer so I don't make loads of money , but I fell you get what you pay for, but I want a good and practical course to better defend my wife and our my own life, having good gun skills and a carry permit does not make me adequately trained, thus the reason I post this thread. what schools r courses do you suggest?

There are various training centers like Thunder Ranch, or this link I found for you,http://www.blackwaterusa.com/courses/AT_NC_courses.html, it depends on how much and how long you want. I can't tell you how this industry has grown since the Iraq situation started, if you gopogle firearms training, you are going to be swamped with a hundred sites, promising any and all skills taught in a very small amount of time, it's up to you to dfo the research to see what fits your needa and wallet. Tripple cnopy uses several facilitys accross the country, they too are contractors. Here is another for handguns, http://www.frontsight.com/Schedule.asp?View=List

If Fort lewis doesn't have a pistol club for you to participate in, look for local IDPA meets. While not real professional training, it will allow you to fire your pistol under movement and under "sometimes" realistic SD-combat conditions. For non-members, each meet usually costs only $20 (bring your own ammo) and runs you thru ~4 defensive scenarios.

i am active duty as well, i am stationed at ft. stewart currently deployed, but after this deployment me and a army buddy are going to Tactical Response. for fighting pistol and advanced fighting pistol, 4 days of trainning with yeager and crew, look for shaclemenot on here he is the pesident and a great help he would be glad to answer any questions. one of the great things about that place btw in camden tenn . they have a team room that you can stay in so you don't hve to pay for lodging. i suggest a website thier website www.getoffthex.com also they do alumni trainning weekends every year 2days of free trainning for those that have completed a course there. they havemay options for courses coverng everything. check out thier schedule at www.tacticalresponse.com and the courses offered i am sure that they will be able to train you up on any weapon system that you are wnting training on, btw they do travel.

also check out tdi ohio they have some great courses and it s well worth the money. either would be great, and both would be benificial to ayone who attends. one thing i like about the 2 above places is they give great traiing and they do so at a very reasonable price point.

Firearm Academy of Seattle also offers a military discount. Their 2 day course shouldn't be much more than a C-Note. The training is pretty good.
Gunsite down in Arizona has a vetrans 250 (basic pistol) class once a year, for OIF and OEF vets. This is a full on 5 day class for free, all you bring is yourself, your guns and suitable ammo.
Thunder Ranch in Oregon is fairly close, and Clint is good people. Sign up early for his classes, though, as they tend to fill up quick.

I hear good things about FAS, but I've never trained there.
I can personally vouch for the quality of the InSights trainers. I've taken at least 7 courses from them, and have sent my wife & my daughter to their Unarmed Self Defense course.
