What a Great Evening! I went to my third gun collector's club meeting, Pioneer Gun Collectors, and won the $500 drawing!:D I now have a year to purchase a firearm from any club member and the club will pay the first $500 of the price, or all of the price if the gun is less than $500!!
I was a bit embarrased since some of the members have never won the drawing ... I won on my third meeting (only my first meeting after becoming a full-fledged member )
Even more embarrassing was the fact that my son was the person the club president chose to pull the names out of the hat :what::scrutiny:

But the president validated the draw and now I have won!!:D And it's my birthday tomorrow to boot :D:D

So the excitement really begins...what to buy?

I have wanted a sharps-type rifle for some time, but a club member has counseled me that these are the most enjoyable if you build them yourself, (with the assistance of the gunsmith when needed)

I don't have a .223, and everyone should ya know

I would love to become competent at 300 + yard shots, first for fun at the range, but later possibly for hunting. But I don't know if my current limitations are from my current .308 rifles or my changing eyesight?

The first thing someone said was that I should get an AK, but I had an AK and did not like it/sold it.

I like the idea of maybe an AR or an FAL, or maybe another M1, I guess I am sorta sold on the idea of another rifle as opposed to another pistol or shotgun.

The limitations of buying from a club member is not really bad at all, as these guys have awesome collections and many are FFL's.

Any suggestions?

You lucky duck!

I too would love a sharps, but I don't know if I have the patience or the skill to assemble one my self (not much of a wood worker). If I didn't already have a .223 I'd probably have to tackle that task. Bolt or Auto?

Hang on for one week. Give yourself a "cooling off period"
before you make an impulse buy. Think things over, weigh your options, then maky your choice.
Congratulations!

I agree with Owen.

then when you come to your senses.... transfer the club credit to me. :neener:

no, but seriously.... spend some time thinking about it.

I was talking with one club member that was convinced that I should buy something that could be banned...thus the AR FAL thoughts.

Give yourself a "cooling off period"
So that's what cooling off periods are for! ;)

I'd look at winning the drawing at your first official meeting as a good omen. Personally I'd give myself the whole year to find a really good deal from a fellow club member who's willing to part with a rare gem. You can buy an AR or M1 any time.

go ahead and get the AR, you know you want it...

For a few hundred or so $$ of your own money on top of the prize money, your in!

Let me help you spend your money!$!

It's what I do!

"Never ask me about the business."

... and the President is your son-in-law, right?

;) Just kidding --I'm pleased for you.

I also won a raffle last night.

I only won a 1982 proof set at the coin club meeting though.

Want to trade prizes?

Well shoot! AR it is then... Just broke down and got one myself about a year ago. Good gun. Shop around enough and you probably won't have to spend too much more!

I won a Civil War bugle tape once. It's for reenactors so they can learn the calls. Too bad I'm no reenactor.

I also won a powder horn in another raffle.

Wanna trade for either or both?

Kidding. Congratulations and enjoy your gun.

"...a bit embarrased..." Why? You won fair and square. How long you're a member of anything doesn't matter. Luck of the draw. Congratulations.
$500 isn't enough to buy any Sharps rifle. $1609 and up from Shiloh. It's a dandy start though.
Oh, and Happy Birthday.

The only time I won anything

was at a large Cowboy Action match that I was running. We had some door prizes come in late so I just added these to the raffles we had running. A lot of it was small stuff but there were a couple pretty nice things in there as well. Several of these were gift certificates from Kirkpatrick Leather. I would read off what the prize was and my daughter would draw out the ticket. I was surprised to find a certificate for a complete 2 gun rig with shotgun belt. I was even more surprised when my daughter drew my name. I felt a little guilty at first, though I wasn't guilty of anything but a little good luck. the funny part is that the man who provided these certificates was not able to come but sent the prizes anyway. Had he been there the rig would have been given to a shooter in a somewhat random fashion. I was not able to shoot with so much going on and would therefore not have been able to win that prize. I called him later to tell him what happenned and he could not have been happier. In fact, he realized that some of the people that do the most work never had a chance to win such agreat prize and was considering changing the way he awarded it. That rig was worth $500 and I love it.:D

Congrats on your win. Now if you were a true gentleman and were really in touch with your feminine side you would buy your wifey a nice diamond ring or something!:neener::neener:

or if your a true gentleman you will buy me some AK mags and plenty of x39 to fillem, :p

congrats
