I have one of the Chinese "Trench Gun" copies of the Model 97 shotgun. A friend of mine has been bugging me to sell it to him because he says the supply of these has dried up. When I bought mine they were pretty common at gun stores and gun shows. The importer's website doesn't mention this model:

So is anyone still seeing these in their neck of the woods?

I emailed IAC recently about their trench gun, and was told "Another production of this model will be made in this coming fall."

Guess I would be wondering why anyone would want to financially help the Chinese if there were alternatives??...Guess that's MY snobbery, or is it patriotism, showing.....

oh well, guess I "just don't get it"

Alternative = $3,000 original trench gun. Little bit outside my fiscal reality.

 yup, you sure showed them. how dare they offer a reasonably priced product despite every effort to block their import.

like any other thread where ultra nationalism is masqueraded as some noble venture, im done here.

simple facts, they can make a cheap, good product, that American company's don't.

IAC replica

I bought one of these 2 weeks ago NIB for less than $250 out the door. Thought about then had them ship me another one. I haven't shot either one yet but they seem to be well made and well worth the $229 price tag. I have an original 97 trench gun that I won't shoot, to me this is close enough that can enjoy the gun safely without ruining the value of the original. Just my 2 cents worth

you're right about the "cheap" part...good remains to be seen....

I've been checking Gunbroker and GunsAmerica and I never see them any more.

Is that ban still in effect, though?

Hoppy590, if you were willing to work for their wages, you might be able to get a job making a cheap, good gun here, in Massachusetts even.

The Chinese copies of the 1897 apparently clean up quite well and, once an action job is done, are popular with cowboy action shooters.

The trench guns have a similar reputation.

Probably because they don't have to worry about all those pesky (and expensive) environmental and labor laws. Good on 'em, I say. The benefits of indentured servitude and environmental rape are grossly underrated.

There is one for sale in a local store here. They're not very appealing to me since they are kinda stiff, and a Chinese copy doesn't hold much collector appeal when it comes to the USGI gee-wiz factor. (Well, maybe a full-auto Tommy gun would, but other than that.) I wouldn't choose it over an 870 or a Mossberg for a good, inexpensive and functional shotgun. Finally, I am leery of Chinese-manufactured metal goods ever since my elderly dad had a Chinese wrench break in his hands as he was tightening a nut.
