I googled and found this comment

by an Icelander, posted in the last few years:

They had extra many murders in 1956 and after that they banned handguns. Most people turned theirs in voluntarily but they confiscate them if they find them. If you are a member of a gun club and shoot for competition, you can have one and some people have them illegally but it's not a problem. Criminals don't bother carry guns because they know the victim wont have one. They just use knifes, baseball bats etc. The police don't even carry guns except the special forces.

If you want to have a rifle or shotgun for hunting, you need a license and you need to take a safety course to get it but it's not a big deal. Gun safety law says that you cannot keep a loaded weapon in your house, you must always keep the weapon and ammo locked up and separate. Not that the police is in your house to make sure that you do but that law is probably because kids might get to your gun and play with it.

@dasmi: are you being transferred there for work, or stationed at the Naval base? Or just curious about that part of the world?

@BlondHector: welcome aboard THR!

This site explains some of the laws in Iceland, at least as far as what you may import into the country:

So no semiautomatic rifles are allowed. Period. Autoloading shotguns are OK, but must not be loaded to over 3 rounds. I didn't notice, or I overlooked, any mention of handguns from this site. Maybe someone else can enlighten us.

Iceland, independant?

Nowhere near as much as the Icelanders might like to think.

They appreciate our airbase because it prevents them from having to make any "agreements" with any of their neighbors.

Research commercial fishing with regard to Iceland for some interesting stuff.
