They had extra many murders in 1956 and after that they banned handguns. Most people turned theirs in voluntarily but they confiscate them if they find them. If you are a member of a gun club and shoot for competition, you can have one and some people have them illegally but it's not a problem. Criminals don't bother carry guns because they know the victim wont have one. They just use knifes, baseball bats etc. The police don't even carry guns except the special forces.
If you want to have a rifle or shotgun for hunting, you need a license and you need to take a safety course to get it but it's not a big deal. Gun safety law says that you cannot keep a loaded weapon in your house, you must always keep the weapon and ammo locked up and separate. Not that the police is in your house to make sure that you do but that law is probably because kids might get to your gun and play with it.
