Identifying Old S&W top breaks

I have recently aquired an old S&W double action 38S&W topbreak.
What I can find on the net identyfies it as a 3rd issue model 2.
I find some info about New style and Old style hammers and triggers, how do I find out wich kind of hammer and trigger mine is?

Any help is appreciated!

To identify your revolver more information is needed. Look on the bottom of the butt and you'll find the serial number. Then look at the top of the barrel rib and there should be a series of patent dates. Post at least the last three dates and the serial number and we'll see what can be found out.

Concerning hammers, S&W made two models with conventional hammers that could be thumb-cocked, and one that had an internal hammer, was double-action only, and had a grip safety on the back of the handle that had to be pressed inward before the trigger could be pulled. Knowing which you have is necessary too.

It is the kind with exposed hammer, both DA and SA, and with only one cylinder stop bolt notch for each chamber.

The gun is about three weeks away from me, I'll post serial number and patent dates when it arrives, might try to post a picture as well.

Ok, heres more info:

Serial number:
128164

Patent dates:
jan.24.65, july 11.65, aug.24.69, reissue july 25.71, may 11.80, jan 3. 82.

Nickle finish, black/brown bakelite grips, exposed hammer, DA/SA, 38S&W caliber, one cylinder stop.

according to this site:

It is a second model third issue, but it does not give any exact year, only that it is made 1884 or later.

Can anyone giive any more specific info on year of manufacture, and if this revolver has the "new style" hammer and trigger?

Any help greatly appreciated!
