Insurer:
Your Model 36 chiefs Special was manufactured in 1973 or 1974. Serial range for those years was J100000 to J250000, so 1974 seems likely.

Value is dependent upon condition. Pics would be required. In excellent condition $350 or so would probably be about right, but i suggest you post a new thread with pics if you want a better idea of value.

Date of manufacture For S & W revolver

Need date of manufacture For S&W " Hand Ejector or Military & Police 38 Special " ? 5" nickel non -adjustable sights S# 3243XX on frame, barrel and grip panel. Also does anyone have a 5" nickel barrel that fits this gun? Thanks

ucs100:
You have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change manufactured in 1919 or 1920. It has a heat treated cylinder, so it should be safe to shoot modern standard velocity ammunition. It predates the positive hammer block safety, so it would be prudent to treat it as a 5 shooter, with the chamber under the hammer left empty. The barrel stamping will be .38 S&W Special CTG. CTG stands for cartridge.

www.gunpartscorp.com is the first port of call when looking for old parts.

S & W info

Thanks for your quick reply. I have browsed the GunParts site and they don't have a barrel at this time. Hoping someone who follows this site might have an idea where else to look . Thanks again. ucs100

There are two other parts suppliers/ gun dismantlers; their names escape me at the moment. Possibly a new thread in the gunsmithing section will get you contact details. IIRC both are telephone only operations.

19-5 6" Blued born on date

Hi Radagast, I just picked up a 19-5 6" blued S&W ser# 198k645 The 1 kinda looks like an l, but I think its a 1. Around when do you think this was made?

Thanks ahead, Richard

Dates of manufacture for:

1) S & W New Model No 3, serial number 33244, 6 1/2 inch barrel, presumably .44 Russian;

2) S & W Model of 1903, serial number 89740, in .32 S & W Long.

Just picked up a blued "I" frame, 3 1/4"barrel, round butt, 5 screw plus the mainspring strain screw, serial 277xxx, chambered for the 32 S&W Long cartridge. Hard rubber grips with matching serial number to the revolver. I will post pics in the revolver section. Curious as to approximately when it was built.

Strawhat:
You have a .32 Hand Ejector third Model manufactured between 1917 (serial number 263000) & 1920 (serial number 321000).
Normally I would call that as 1917, but with wartime production of the .45 ACP Model 1917 Army beginning that year, I would not be surprised if production of civilian models was held up somewhat. Your gun does not have a heat treated cylinder, so stick to standard pressure loads, don't try and hot rod handloads. It also predates the positive hammer block safety introduced during WWII. It would be prudent to leave the chamber under the hammer empty until you are ready to shoot.

orpington:
Your New Model No.3 frame was manufactured prior to 1898. Frames were stockpiled and finished as orders came in, until it was deleted from the catalog in 1908. It was most likely assembled and shipped some time between 1898 & 1904.
Serial numbers 33668-33197 shipped to Japan Sept. 1st 1898.
Serial numbers 33501-33642 shipped to Japan May 16th 1904.
Caliber is probably .44 S&W, but there were several other calibers, including .44-40.

Your .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903 2nd Change dates to the period 1905-1909, serial range for those years was 51127-95500, so late 1908 or 1909 seems likely.

Model 10-5, round butt, 2" C8500XX

Model 15 Square butt 2" (engraved) K8002XX

Model 28-2 (I think) 4" Square butt S2759XX

Model 37 2"ish round butt 6029XX

Thanks for the help!

M63 no dash stainless kit gun 4"

Hi Radagast, saenzrich here again, could you plz date this model 63 for me. SN: M152XXX.....do you think $700 is too much for this gun. Comes with grips, box and papers.

1KPerDay:
Model 10-5 .38 Military & Police tapered barrel = 1966 or 1967, with 1966 being likely as the serial range ran from C810533 to C999999 for those years.

Model 15 Combat Masterpiece dates to 1968 & should be a Model 15-3. If you think it is factory engraved it may be worth spending the $50 to have it researched and 'lettered' by the S&W historian to see if it was a presentation piece or special order.

Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman dates to 1966-67. Serial range for those years was S262000 to S289999, so take your pick as to which year is more likely.

Model 37 Chiefs Special Airweight dates to between 1966 (Serial number 392778 & 1969 (serial number 786544). The Standard Catalog of S&W doesn't give year to year breakdowns for the early J frames, so that's as close as i can give you.

saenzrich:
G'day mate. That Model 63 dates to 1980 or 1981. Serial range for those years was M130001 to M160000.
Price sounds very high to me, but I am Australian, so my knowledge of US pricing is lacking. I suggest you start a new thread and ask for opinions.

Your such a great help. One day I want to talk to you about the monies and how they differ from the Homeland. You are a great help to THR and are a positive influence on this site. -Richard

Radagast,

THANK YOU very much for your invaluable information! I looked last night to see what else I had, and found three more I have often wondered about. All the rest I think I have letters from Roy Jinks.

1) .38 Double Action Fourth Model in .38 S & W, number 480748.

2 & 3) Two .32 Double Action NEW Model 1 1/2's, I think these date from 1878 to 1892, but I could be wrong. These are top-breaks, not tip-ups. Serial number 46,811 and 34,935.

MUCH thanks in advance for your invaluable information!

orpington:
The .38 Double Action 4th Model was manufactured between 1895 & 1909 in the serial range 322701 to 539000. The info in the Standard Catalog of S&W allows that to be narrowed down a bit. Everything after 1898 & serial number 382022 is not an antique. American Express Co. ordered guns up to 1905, with serial numbers ending around 486000.
So 1899-1905, the serial range is 382022 to 486000, or just under 14,000 guns per year on average. As yours is 5,000-6,000 off the known 1905 serial range, its probably fairly safe to assume yours is from 1904 or 1905.

Supica & Nahas have a long screed in the SCSW (which I highly recommend you buy) where they call the .32 Single Action the Model Number One & a Half Centerfire, while the .32 Double Action is just the .32 Double Action.
Serial number 34,935 is a .32 Double Action 3rd Model, manufactured in 1882 or 1883 in the serial range 22173 to 43405, so take your pic as to which year.

Serial number 46,811 is a .32 Double Action 4th Model, serial range ran from 43406 to 209301 for the period 1883 to 1898, or about 11,000 guns a year, so 1883 or early 1884 seems likely.

THANK YOU. I just was going to revise the post, and you beat me to it. Those 32 1 1/2 models are the single action ones which date from 1878 to 1892, NOT the double action one. My apologies! It is the single action 1 1/2 centerfire. If I could get the dates on these two, being this model, that would be GREAT! 34935 & 46811. It is easy to get confused with Smith & Wessons!

Gotcha.
Unfortunately the only info in the SCSW on the .32 Single Action is serial range 1-97574 in the period 1878-1892. From factory letters that have been posted on line I know that 2866x shipped 10 Nov. 1880 & 8837x shipped August 1887. Based on roughly 8,500 guns per year, serial number 34935 probably shipped in late 1881 or early 1882, serial number 46811 probably shipped in late late 1882 or early 1883.

If you can share Models, dates & serial numbers from your lettered guns (replace the last three digits with xxx for privacy) I can annotate my Standard Catalog of S&W and give better answers in the future.
