I started shooting IPSC back in April. I am using a Springfield XD to compete in Production. I am interested to hear from some of the long time competitors on what their equipment progression was. What did you start with, how long did you stick with that, and how long before you moved up to something else?

Started with a para p-14 in both IDPA and USPSA. Shot that for like two years. Took a few years off an then started again in USPSA with a custom STI in 40 for limited.

Started in IDPA SSR with a model 66; shot SSP with a Glock 17 for a while, cause I figured out revolvers were challenging; then decided I enjoyed the challenge, bought a 625 and went back to SSR. I hope to add some IPSC shooting with it into my mix this summer.

IDPA Equipment

Started this year with G22 for SSP (broke a pin...it's in rehab for 6-8 weeks).

Tried the G23...draws fast...tough for me on Stage 3.

Brought out the G35...a little slower out of the holster...more forgiving on Stage 3. Will probably use the G23 for the next few matches until the G22 gets back on line...although the G35 would be a good challenge too for running through the house...still deciding.

Looking to try my CZ-75's out in ESP later this year.

Have a Mil-Spec as well as a P220ST on layaway so I may give CDP a whirl in the fall.

Safe shooting,

CZ52'

I started IDPA a little over a year ago with a Glock 32 - 23 barrel installed, borrowed holster.

I graduated to a Safariland 0701 - won my fair share if I did my job correctly.

Switched to a Kimber TLE II, worst gun I've ever bought. Ditched it in a hurry once I found the right buyer.

A glock 19 came up and I snapped it up in a hurry. I used that with meprolights for IDPA quite sucessfully with my 0701.

I'm doing a holster changeover now - friend of mine showed me a Sidearmor rig, and I'm flat out convinced its faster than anything I've ever used. I'm a sidearmor dealer now and I plan on using their gear for USPSA production and IDPA exclusively with my newly acquired G34.

The 34 has adj meprolights, I may go with CGR race cut heinies, fixed meps, or Dawson Perfect Impacts.

In fact, I've been kicking around the idea of the Total IDPA/USPSA Package for sale.

IDPA

Any sidearmor holster of your choice
2 mag holders

Royal Robbins 5.11 vest.
One year IDPA/NRA membership included - PERFECT for the newbie.

USPSA Production

Any sidearmor holster of your choice
5 mag holders
Wilderness belt, any size
One year USPSA/NRA membership included - PERFECT for the newbie as well.

G21 for Major in IPSC

Started with a Glock 21 for Major Limited or limited 10 in IPSC then got a G34 in 9mm for the new Production class since all calibers are scored minor, why punish your response time with a 45 and besides 9mm Blazer is only $80 a thousand.
Std Fobus belt slide mag holders for the 9 or a 40 and the larger ones for the 45
Houge speedholster
Uncle Mikes duty belt rig with smaller trouser belt & 4 keepers

Rifle is Bushmaster M4 or Norinco AK, both score as minor

Shotgun is a Rem 100 semi auto with 9 shot extension in 20 gage youth model, and I'm 5-11" 225 lbs, the 20 gage works just as good as the 12 did just less punishing, especially when you're hammerinmg 12 slugs downrange fast as possible.

Better hald uses same except for the pistol, she used a G35 in 40 cal with Eotech mounted in Open class and a G17 in 9mm for production.

Started IPSC in 2000 with a P14 that I had built up as a carry gun eight years before that. Ran it for a year out of a Dillon leather holster, then switched to a Limcat. Changed to a fiber optic front sight after six months, switched the left side narrow thumb safety out for an extra-wide version around the same time.

Won a 6-inch "Fat Free .40" STI from Triangle Shooting Sports at the Texas State Limited in 2001.

Started shooting that instead of the P14 and watched my scores jump 10%.

Bought an Open STI last year. Went up two classes in four months. I like Open...

Did about the same thing with AR's in USPSA 3-Gun. Started with a Bushy M4 and a Reflex 2. Upgraded a year later to a Bang Inc. comp and a Trijicon NSN01 4-power. Upgraded a year after that to a AR of my own production (18" .750 with a JP tank brake, OKO on the handguard, Leupold 1.5-5 on a LaRue base, 2 pound single stage trigger, ACE SOCOM stock)...and watched my finish at the Texas State 3-Gun go from middle of the pack to 3rd in the State (and 4th in NM this year, come to think of it).

Haven't messed with my IDPA gear, but I don't play that game much (I still practice, after all, and IDPA stands for I Don't Practice Anymore) :neener:

SSP: Mostly stock G22 (Vanek Trigger, Sidearmor holster...I second the "love dem holsters" post).
ESP: My carry gun, dumbed down for IDPA. STI Commander in 9 by 23 with the light 8lb spring so it will run 9mm wusstacular ammo instead of 9 Supercomp, 10 rounds instead of the 18 that fit in the flush-fit magazines).
CDP: Wilson CQB with the factory flaws corrected
Revolver: 4" 625 with Bang grips, fiber front sight, and a double-action-only rebuild.

USPSA started with a Taurus 92 about 1.5 years with it
then got a almost new SV40 and have used it since 96. Same safariland rig also. So much for the equipement race. Still use the Taurus 92 for production blade tech holster and galco mag holders.

IDPA started with the old Taurus set up and still use it for SSP. Got a used Nowlin 38 super for ESP with a uncle mike plastic holster and the galco mag holders.

I started 2 years ago with a SW4013TSW pre-rail carried in a Fobus paddle holster. I only had two magazines at 9 rounds a piece... which made for some interesting times.

I then moved up by getting another magazine, and some more practice.

Now I've "graduated" to a setup I really enjoy...
9mm CZ75B in the ESP division carried in a Cen-Dex Nighthawk on a 5-stitch WIB.
I'm still using paddle mag holsters from Fobus as they seem to fit my needs, are durable, and inexpensive.

Next - to finish building my AR and move into 3-gun.

Started IPSC with a Les Baer PII in .45 ACP. Graduated to a Fat Free 6 inch Limited gun from Benny at Triangle Shoting Sports. I then went to Open Division with one of Benny's .38 Super Open blasters. From there I went to Revolver Division with a Smith 610. Then I started shooting Production with a CZ 75B.

I shoot the most competitive scores in Production with the CZ followed by the Baer in L10. I am having Benny build me a new Open gun and I am also getting a short Open gun from Bob Londrigan. Tomorrow I am shooting a big steel match that I really want to win. I'll be shooting the old stand by...single stack .45 Baer.

I started IPSC on April too (placed 17th out of 19). Gun is a Springer PX9109l, holster and 2 double mag pouches by Uncle Mikes. On my first competition I used 5 Metalform 7 rounders, now I use 4 CMC 10 rounders.

Don't laugh, but I started with a Ruger P91 out of a cheap nylon holster. :)

Quickly went to a Springfield loaded for CDP and a Fobus. Used that for a long time. IWI nightsights.

Got a Kimber/BUL on a trade, some folks have had problems, but mine has been awesome. I now use it out of a G-Code. I load 8 for IDPA, 14 for everything else. XS sights. (work well for me).

Someday I will probably save up a little extra cash and go the STI route. I have been very impressed with the ones that I have used so far. However right now my Kimber is serving me well, and I really do not have the skills neccesary to shoot better than it is capable of.

For rifle I'm still using the same ones as when I started. Imbel parts L1A1 for when I feel like a He-Man, Vepr K with Krebs A2 sights the rest of the time. Going to go with a .223 Vepr w/ EoTech, hopefully later this year once I take care of some other business.

Shotgun I started with an 870, and have wheelbarrows of rounds through various 870s. I still use an 870 a lot. I decided to get an auto to be serious in 3gun, and on a whim I got a Saiga. However I have been really surprised and I have been doing well with it. No plans to switch shotguns, other than maybe some stock modifications come September 14th. Fingers crossed.

Played around with my 4506 and 92F for IDPA. Tried the 220ST and finally got comfortable with an SW 1911.

Holster wise, I've been happy using Uncle Mike's Kydex on a good belt.

IDPA is a fun way to test and evaluate myself. About half the time I use a .40 Hi Power/ Kramer IWB#2. The rest of the time a G23/35 in a Blade Tech IWB. Trijicons on them.

Kydex mag pouches are Side Armor. Leather mag pouches have been Mernickle, but Rafter S just delivered a new one & it looks good too.

I used a Coonan .357 Mag auto, with full power ammo, in Sparks leather at just one local match & it was great. I learned I need more practice seating the seven round mags on closed slides- just like with topped off G30 mags.

Some day I'll take a revolver and really have fun. But first I need to practice with the speedloaders so I don't totally embarass myself.

It is intersting to see the progression people make in their equipment. Thanks for all the replies so far.

Started shooting IPSC a little over a year ago, IDPA shortly thereafter. First rig: USP40 fullsize in a G-Code paddle holster with G-Code mag pouches. Then switched to a Springfield loaded in .45 (CDP/Lim10) in a KyTac SooperHooper and Kytac/Comp-Tac mag pouches which is what I shoot now.

Shot both games (L10 and CDp classes) with a Kimber Eclipse out of Kydex. That took me to B class in USPSA so I went to an STI Edge this year with a Limcat holster and mag pouches.

The Kimber is still my CDP gun. The custom guns dont shoot any better for me so I thikn I'l lbe done for a while.......

until the AR is done then it's off to 3 gun.......

I only shoot IDPA as thats pretty much all there is in my area.....

SSP- Shot multiple Glocks for the first few years (usually 17, 35 or occasionally a 20), have recently standardized on a 20 if I am serious about winning or a 29 if I want to get some trigger time with my carry gun.

ESP-CZ 75B in 9mm

CDP- Rock Island 1911, currently for sale due to financial considerations

SSR-haven't done this yet, but I will use either my Ruger GP-100 or my SW model 28 Highway Patrolman when I get it off layaway.

Started with CCW gun at the time, a G23.

Went to a G34 with KKm barrel, Bo-Mars and have stayed with it. {Spent way to much time and $ getting the trigger & springs right!} Went from a KyTac holster to a Cen-Dex "Storm" and Wilderness Competition belt. Still using the KyTac pouches as they are very fast yet secure.
Favorite vest is still Domke as found the Robbins ones to heavy and hot for summer.

I've been shooting IPSC for a couple of months, IDPA on and off for three years.

IPSC, I shoot Limited with a CZ-75, factory sights, factory barrel, 3.5# trigger. Comp-Tac locking paddle holster, Safariland mag carriers, Wilderness belt. I'll probably switch to a Safariland belt soon, as the mag carriers aren't a great fit on the Wilderness.

I'm presently building a singlestack 1911a1 which will become my Lim-10/IDPA CDP/Single Stack Classic gun. STI stainless frame and slide, Kart barrel, Sprinco recoil system, and a mix of Ed Brown, EGW, and Nowlin internals. Should be a nice gun by the time it gets finished - I'll probably put my CZ into retirement.

IDPA, I shoot the same gear, but I trade the Safariland mag carriers for Comp-Tac and cover it all with a 5.11 vest. And yes, the vest is too hot and heavy for summer - but it's also nice and stiff.

For 3-gun, I use a homebuilt 16" lightweight AR with an Ultradot scope and a Giles single-point sling. After the 1911 project is done, I'm planning on upgrading the AR - probably a Trijicon ACOG scope, 20" lightweight barrel, float tube, LMT bolt carrier, and a left-side charging handle. My shotgun is a Franchi 612VS Defense, stock except for the sidesaddle and sling. It's perfect as is. :D

i started out in IPSC using a Glock 30 in a Sidearmor IWB holster, which was my carry gun at the time. Later switched to a Kimber Stainless 5" in a bladetech offset drop holster and CMC 10rnd power mags. Later sold the glock to buy a Kimber Compact as a carry gun. I like carrying almost the same gun I run and gun with.

I shoot a stock Glock 19 from a Blade-Tech holster as that is what I carry. Seems a reasonable thing to practice with.

Another beginner

Hello all,
I'm a long time lurker and first time poster. I am a central Kentucky resident and considering getting involved in IDPA. My main question is for Dukeofurl: do you know where I could get more information on that IDPA beginners package and at what price? That seems to have everything Ive been looking for. Thanks for any help.
