In WWI there were some guns specially designed for 'trench sweeping' . One was the Thompson SMG , another was the Browning Auto Rifle . Even the '03 Mk I had that purpose [if you ever heard of it !! ].
It's important to note that while the Thompson was designed as a "Trench Broom," it wasn't finished until after the first world war. It first appeared in the 1920's.
I recall a recent article in -either A.R. or G&A- magazine that talked about trench guns in WWI. Great article. The OPs photo was reminiscent of the era.
