If I move to Colorado, what am I getting myself into?

Suppose I take a job and move to the Denver area. What are the options if someone owned and AR with 30 round mags, or a pistol with 17 round mags or a pistol caliber carbine with 30 round mags? What is a guy supposed to do?

30-rd mags have been illegal in Denver proper for years, long before the new law. Old mags won't matter there, still taboo.

And the grandfather clause for "previously owned" 30-rd mags may only apply to those who were CO residents at the time the new law took place. Can't swear to that though. But I wouldn't sweat bringing them with you.

In reality, if you're at a public range with your AR using 30-rd mags, it's not likely anyone's going to hurry over and demand to inspect them. Just don't drive around in Denver with any guns in your car stuffed with 30-rd mags. Denver and Boulder are their own little worlds.

There is no mention of residency or importing anywhere in the law. Mags that you possessed before June 1 2013 are okay no matter where you were on that date.

Plenty of USPSA matches within a 70 mile radius of Denver. You can shoot a match every weekend.
There is a strong three gun presence.

Thanks for the prompt responses! I appreciate it. I would be considering Broomfield/Thornton area for home, and work in Louisville. So, it sounds like if I transport mags with my personal property, I'm good. I just won't be able to purchase any after I become a resident, or import them in any way (unless the law changes). Is that correct?
I get the Boulder/Denver thing. That's the liberal gun control center of gravity for the state. I can tell from doing business in the area over the years. I hate to say it's like Austin Texas, a liberal island of a county or two. The unfortunate part for Colorado is that area can outvote the rest of the state. Austin can't...

Yes, stay out of the City of Denver. The burbs are fine, and you can keep your mags if you already own them. I used to live in Douglas County, and really liked it. If you need more mags that hold more than 15 rounds buy them BEFORE you move to CO.

Here is the thing, the law is absolutely unenforceable. Even if you drive to WY and buy a case of mags there is no way to tell, unless you say something, if you had them before or after the deadline.

Couple that with pretty much every law enforcement agency, at least sheriffs, going on record saying the law is stupid and will not be enforced and you have little to worry about.

Thank you Robert! The Denver threads keep bringing up their magazine bans (I'm unaware of any AR ban, I don't think that's true), but compliance is so unbelievably low, if you go buy magazines in Wyoming, you'll be waiting in line behind CO police officers with an armful of mags on their own. Our gun culture is still VERY tolerant (and our sheriffs are on OUR side) contrary to what the inter web tells you.

I have a similar concern as the OP, so this is good to hear. I'm planning a trip next month to the four-corners area, and would like to have my trusty 226 on my hip. I keep a 20 rnd mag in a pocket holster, and an 18 round flush mount in the gun.

Some ARs are not legal in the City limits of Denver, I you allready

Can you explain this in more detail please? Quote the law, provide links, etc.? We have a very active AR forum here in CO, and I don't recall hearing anything about any specific AR's being illegal in Denver. 30 round mags, yes.

Many thanks!

I appreciate the conversation! Thanks Robert for your insights. Bill, your comment made me laugh! :D

I might land there before long!

With exception of PMAGS that are date stamped/coded.

I believe they stopped since the advent of this law though. (??) Course which one your distributors have is your best guess.
