I'm an Illinois resident with a FOID card. What would be required of me to buy a handgun in Indiana?

Wait period?

Thanks!!!!!!!

You can buy/purchase a handgun in Indiana, but you can not take possession of it. The handgun will be shipped to a FFL dealer in Illinois, who you will goto and do all the required paperwork for it.

Federal law prohibits a non-licensed person from acquiring handguns in states they do not reside in without the use of a FFL dealer in the state they reside in.

Federal law also prohibits private party transfers of firearms between non-licensed persons that reside in different states without the use of a FFL dealer in the state the buyer resides in.

If OP is looking to circumvent transfer of the handgun in Illinois, there is no legal way to do so. The handgun can be purchased in Indiana either in person, over the phone or electronically, but you can not take possession of it in Indiana. The dealer in Indiana has to ship it to your dealer in Illinois and he has to transfer it to you. The only way for you to take possession in Indiana is to move to Indiana and become a resident.

+1 - they are all correct - has to come from an FFL01 in Illinois. Not good for the folks who live on the border -
